Post op pain from hip operation

I'm six weeks on from having my right hip replaced. Everything went great with the op but had what I can only describe as a very painful muscle spasm on my operated side which gradually lessoned. However it has now returned with avegence and has started to slow down what had been quite a speedy recovery and I'm back to sleepless nights. Has anyone else experienced this, it has been suggested it might be my psoas muscle (pronounced so-as) it is really beginning to worry me. Would welcome others experiences

Hi Christine

Sorry you are going through this.

I am almost 11 weeks post op and I still have spasms. Not as often as when my left hip was first done. But yep still get them. I think it is a combination of the muscle knitting together and the nerves healing. If you are worried contact your surgeon or the clinic and see if they will have a look for you. Hope it is nothing serious.  .

I have pain in the back on the operated side at the pelvis level. this gets worse if I do a lot of bending. I don't have it all the time. It feels very achy when I do get it and I resort to pain killers at night and put gel on.

I did have this before my op though also.

I had this in the first couple of weeks, it then went away, but returned approx week 7-8. This coincided with me walking without any aids and starting to drive again. At 11 weeks get it once in a while. I believe it is part of the healing process

Thanks for responding Hailea it's helpful to know others have the same experiences I was just starting to worry it could be something more sinister, I hope your rehab goes well and thanks again.

yes I had an awful lot of pain before the op particularly at night. I do take pain killers but hoping that this can be sorted with exercises as the pain is really sharp but does go eventually when I move about.

That's interesting I started driving (short distances) at 4 weeks because I felt so well. I use one stick but do move about the kitchen without any aids mainly because I keep forgetting the stick. It's in the morning when I have to get out of bed that the pain is at its worst.

Thanks for for the replies I will keep going and hope things improve, I'm sure they will

does anyone know what the procedure is for a psoas issue. I so appreciate hearing that I am not alone when the pain and numb issues. I am thankful to find out about this site. carole 89019  I am not very computer saavy.  hope I do this all ok

Hi Carole, if you go on you tube and put in hip replacement - exercises to release psoas muscles you will find some useful exercises but make sure you check with your doctor before you do them. I have just been given the name of a lady who will help me with these exercises. This is a fantastic site and I feel better already particularly as everyone responded so quickly.  I hope you feel better soon.

You can find exercises on the net to stretch the psoas muscle but I would say it's probably best to see a physio.

If you type in a search engine 'psoas muscle and back pain - bowen' there is an article about it - I ccan't vouch for whether its good though or not!

going to the internet now...did you mean u tube or just internet.  thank you so much .  Feel happy you on doing so well. and pray for solutions and sleep.... and to off the dilaudid asap.

just general internet search and if you leave out the bowen bit you should find loads of artiicles with exercises - some of which have videos

I went on utube but you can just google you will Be able to access videos, make sure you go careful and take advice Carole hope things improve for you.

thanks i will worse shape than those planning to do the exercises.  My husband is using both hands to assist my moving the knee up toward chest and helping me slide the foot with knee bent toward to torse.  The leg is so stiff and painful and the muscles do not work on their own.  Can not raise the foot while standing more than two inches off of the floor while holding to walker.  Would an MRI show the psoas muscle as to type of damage if any and also read the cement could have gotten on a psoas during surgery and damaging it. I feel like nerve pain and numbness and also psoas....It takes soooo long to get an appt.  but I do have one with an different surgeon.  This has been soooo long without answers.  Appreciate all information and suggestions from those who have experience this type of lack of mobility and have made it out of the problem.  thanks to you and to all who have replied. carole 89019

thanks for the good advice.  Yes indeed I am not capable of most of the movements I saw so far.  I am going to continue to explore the you

tube and everywhere else.  My leg will not do much without being manipulated by my pulling or by assistance of someone. Did anyone

have the surgery on the psoas? carole89010

Oh my you do sound bad Carole. I have just a similar experience in the morning when I wake and I'm on my back I can't move and have to start by wiggling my toes and feet and then gradually I slide one leg up followed by the other leg, it takes a little bit of time but I can do it. It does sound as tho you need professional help and I hope you get it soon. Take care

thank you and I always accept prayers.  I am hoping someone

will have had the recovery for this situation and can reply with any

input. I am on a search mission and reading anything that pops

Have you tried tonic water with quinine in it.That is great for muscle spasms.that's what my doctor said. But no alcohol with it lol

Christine, I wouldn't worry about it to much. here do these tests-

Test 1-

Lay flat on your back in bed.

Keeping your heel in contact with the mattress slowly pull your leg up to your chest bending the knee

Test 2-

Lay flat on your back with your heel on the mattress and your foot sticking up. Without bending your knee, lift your heel up off the bed.

If you can do Test 1 and you can't do Test 2 you most likely have Tendonitis of your psoas muscle. I would not do any exercized AT ALL. Tendoonitis is little rips in the tendon, what you want to do is not do anything that will aggrivate that and cause more rips and deeper rips. I had tendonitis of my IT Band wich runs from the outside of your hip down to your knee. I had it so bad that it became a perment condition, tendonosis. I did the wrong thing. I injured my tendons by repititvly getting up from a foot stool. Even though I hurt lick hell I had to keep doing it for a few weeks as it was a usy time in our business. I thought, "I'll heal after the rush is over" That was completely WRONG and I paid for that mistake dearly, I suffred for 3 years with tendonosis and it only went away after the surgeon replaced my hip. Actually my tendonosis was worse, more debilitating than my hip.

So having experienced tendonitis after about 10 days I knew the feeling when I gt it in my psas muscle. If you can't get into see your doctor any physical therapist will help you confirm. They all know exactly where the psoas muscle is. In fact it was my physical therapist who examined me and gave me the name of that musle that was hurting.

What you want to do is not do anything that hurts that muscle, let it rest and let all those little rips in the tendon heal up, don't exercize.

I couldn't sit for very long and especially getting up after sitting hurt. So I didn't sit, I simply laid on the sofa or laid in bed until it healed up.

It took about 3 weeks and mine healed up and i have not had any further problems. Best of luck to you and I hope it is not your psoas muscle.

Good morning Christine - How are you doing?  I hope you had a quiet and peaceful night ... This same issue has brought me this forum  in week 3-4 post op ... it all made sense to me and I mentioned it to my Physical Therapist -- well, they don't like it too much when you find things or asked about a possible condition and said that it was not psoas but "just" the muscle .... it got worse when she put me on exercise machine and added weight and wanted me to come in 2x a week --- I cancelled a couple of appointments and told her I was going to see someone else who might have a diferent approach - now she massages the muscle and puts me on stationary bike ....I am not sure this helps you  in any way ... maybe your husband can gently massage the muscle?

Just listen to your body --- I believe there is no gain in having pain -- ben gentle with your self today ...warm hug
