post op TKR pain

Hi im calling on you great people for your advise regarding the excessive pain that is driving me mad!! I'm almost 3 weeks post op now and although very tough I had noticed an improvement over the last few days. But yesterday it went down hill as my wound is very long and stretches 6/8 inches above my knee. The muscle above my knee was extremely weak and the physio told me to concentrate on the exercises to make it stronger. But the top of the wound down to my knee is swollen and very painful and has halted me doing any exercises and very painful just to stand up. I can't think of anything I have done to injure my left except maybe move a little awardiy in the night. But it is definitely raised and feels solid and extremely tender. Could this be a bursitis? And if so will it go away with rest. Doing exercise makes it worse. The area almost wants to break out the skin. Please if anyone else have or having this problem please tell me what's the best way to deal with this. Thanks everyone.

Hello jayne

i think you would be wise to have your wound checked by a doc for signs of infection. Request a visit. It may not be, but it would be best to be on the safe side. I did not have a lot of pain from my wound but i have had an infected bite once and i nearly passed out when i stood up from the pain. You have a very long wound and it shouldnt be so tender in my experience. Let us know how you get on.

Hi, Jane. You seem to have two problems. Firstly you may have an infection of your stitch area. Unlikely to be bursitis as that occurs over prominent bony areas. Get it checked at your doctor as you may need antibiotics . The above knee pain you are describing sounds like quad muscle pain. I had it. Keep working on your muscle strength and it will improve . Mine went after 5 weeks. It will get better.

If you have any drainage whatsoever bet to an emergency room. Otherwise, get on pain meds, do gentle excercise just to keep a little movement and ice That hardness is the inner scar healing and can really be almost crippling for awhile. Give it plenty of rest and elevate. If it isn't better in 24 hrs call your surgeon. He ,ay want to give it a look

Thank you. Yes will do gentle bends etc. But rest . and elevate. And hope that sorts it. self out. Thank you. X

See your GP regarding pain management. There are many different groups of medicines you can take. Dont forget ice packs round the knee
