I’m 37 and have had a bunion for as long as I can remember, worsened after pregnancies. It was never painful until the last few years. It is usually better with supportive shoes and I don’t care about the cosmetic side. I mostly get pain in my toe joint...not on the bunion. I notice it when I’m on my toes (yoga, hiking...)
If I go with the surgery it will require cutting the metatarsal and pins no plates. Will I be able to do yoga after? Do you get full range of the big toe joint? Think downward dog on your big toe... it needs to be flexible.
Also, what is the “real” recovery time? I hike and do lots of yoga... like 24 mike hikes.
Thank you for your help
Hi Afelton
Just going through the recovery! 7weeks in. I couldn't't do downward facing dog, the foot no longer bent properly, I couldn't walk more than 4 miles without being in agony and any car drive that lasted more than 15 minutes was torture. So anything that improved my quality of life I was prepared to do. You have to think what are your priorities in life?
I am 8 weeks post. Right foot is good, left is not. Doing physio and stretched. Have an ultrasound to check on left foot. No way could I do yoga. Very stiff left big toe. Can run. Driving hurts. Friends tell me after 12 months I will be fine. Hope so.
I think you should expect your big toes to be quite stiff. The surgery tends to lower the metatarsal head and so your big toe sits higher than pre op. Mine have lost feeling to a large extent and I walk with them stuck up! I don’t do yoga but I am still quite nervous about standing on tip toes.
How long ago was your surgery?
Seven months ago tomorrow. But I am 65!
