Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster (shingles). It produces chronic pain along cutaneous nerves and often some distortion of sensation. The pain can either persist after the acute episode of shingles or recur in an area previously affected by shingles. See also the separate Shingles article.
