potty training

hi guys. Had my right THR on 7th, just found this group and happy i did!  loads of support and info on here. Great to feel less alone with worries.

I am generally doing ok - same concerns and complaints as a lot of people have posted. Fear of dislocation being the major one!

I was looking today for info about bladder control post op. The last couple of days i have needed to pee so much, and so suddenly! embarrassing to say the least. Is this somethig others have experienced? Does it last long?

Thanks in advance

Gertie - Yes, I think it can be partially caused by catherther, even if you were not aware you had one, you probably did during the surgery, they don't need you peeing all over your yourself during surgery, and you may have a very low grade infection, are you running a temp, if not don't worry about that. Secondly the catherter could have caused some irritation, and you are getting over that.  Also I think some of the tablets your are on for post surgery, especially blood thinners seem to cause you to go to the loo lots. Been there done that it does pass. Just go with the flow so too speak, do your exercises, sleep lots, eat lots of protein, eggs, yoghurt good for you, keep with your precautions for a few moore weeks, welcome to the land of the new hippies. lots of good friends here on this forum.

Gertie, been there to wet my self more than once it goes with the process, it does get better, happened to me first/second week, then like alot of things it just gets better. As lyn says it may be you had a cathether, i did for all thebtime i was in, great that you found us, this wonderful family has been such a help to me,

It's one of those things that no-one tells you about before the operation

It does wear off eventually - at 6 weeks, I can go through some nights without getting up in the middle of the night.

Thanks 😊 have no idea if had catheter during the op, never thought about that! Blood thinners makes loads of sense.

Swelling in my leg has reduced a little today so prob flushing some of that out too.

So, a common problem then, relief!

A week or so I was having to go to the loo about 6 times or more a night and was absolutely desperate to get there on the way.  Even if you go straight back to sleep when you get back to bed (which you probably don't) you still end up exhausted.  It was almost as bad during the day.   My brother (a retired doctor) suggested an old fashioned remedy of Cit Pot Mist which normally comes in liquid form.  I couldn't find it in that form immediately but found capsules of potassium citrate on the South American river.

this week I have been visiting the loo at the most once a night and have had a couple of nights when I haven't needed to get up once - absolute luxury.  Whether the capsules have helped or not I'm not sure, it might just be time that has improved things but things are now so much better.

Never heard of that, will google. Thanks!

dear gertie,

welcome to our hippies family ...

same here -  I was told I did not have a catheter so am assuming the bloodthinning injections --- goodness, what an ordeal ... one way to get your exercises done ... it does get better however .... and I am not sure if this is just me, it seems to be much trickier to get to the loo on time ... I mean, well, if I gotta-go and don;t go immediately it can cause a little problem -

this whole goint to the toilet thing is kept a secret - it took some time to get the hang of it, so to speak - even with the raised seat -

well, enough said

big warm hug

There are so many 'little' things like this that you are just never told about, then when you ask on this forum, someone will say 'oh, yes, I ge tthat too', or 'oh yes, that's another common complaint'.

As someone has said, I should write a hippies manual - so I am taking notes now of all the 'little' things we seem to experience. If I manage to get it published (quite a job, ask my wife), the book will be too late for us, but may provide some support in the future.

Graham

That is an awesome idea!

Incredible that something so fundamental isn't addressed. Glad it gets better, for all of our sakes!

Thankyou for the warm welcome, hippest group going 😉

Graham, if your book just gives some one a bit of confidence to go thru this it will be worth it, with younguys i would a: never have gone through with it and b: be a total nervous wreck not knowing if this or that is right. I am srevbetween us all you must have two volumes.

Advice number one in the book will be - Join Patient.Info Hip forum !

The blood thinner is the culprit in this case and the situation that you find yourself in will ease when you are finished with them.

Thanks. On that subject how long do we take them for? I am assuming till doc says otherwise?

Once again it depends on hospital/surgeon and what you are on.  I was given enough capsules to take 2 a day until 28 days after the operation.  I still have a couple of days to go and that will be it.  As I said earlier I am now going through the night (or near enough) although still taking the medication.

Mine was for 5 weeks.

Graham

How it was explained to me was in hospital i would have injections, then when i get discharged the dosge that is left would be in tablet form, i had to take two every day for 4 weeks.  Finished them at weekend, sox came off and not had to get up to go loo either.

sue xx

Thanks, that is same as I have.

It wasn't really explained to me at all! I was given them to take home, in the bag with the rest of my meds. I will finish the pack
