Hi.
All the vest for a speedy recovery.
I remember in March as was very nervous going in for surgery
But waking up feeling my leg still there. Lol. Yes I was worried.
Getting up initially was very scary but they know what they are doing.
They should have you on good pain meds as well, but itβs anazing how quick your up and moving, doing the toe back and forth and ankle rotations for circulation was very important.
Do the exercises they ask for at least a few times a day. Done seem to easy but they are all important. Post surgery deoressed sad time I was told was normal, but didnβt expect it. Was doing fantastic then had pain, 3 steps forward two back for awhile and was discouraged but it all works out usually.
Vest of recovery.
I am close to 6 months post op and doing 5km an hour most days. Gardening and biking.
Pre op monkeypearl is just a medical and taking down your medical history, well mine was and if you are lucky the pre op nurse will ring your surgeon's secretary and get a date for your op. Again with luck it should be very quick.
After my op I had no pain at all therefore did not need painkillers but, in the hospital they were obsessed with giving them to you. Do not feel you are in a race to walk without support, you are not, take your time, do everything in your own time no one elses.
Good luck for when you do get your operation.
Hi Pete,
i know exactly how you feel. I have my pre op on 17th September and then my surgery at the beginning of October. I have waited for this surgery for over 14 months Now itβs getting closer I am getting nervous.
I have also made my home βpost surgeryβ friendly.
i am sure we will both be absolutely fine.
Best Wishes
Linda
My pre op was quite fun there were several of us there and they told us about the op and we had a slide show. They also took blood tests, questionnaire, ecg, urine etc etc. I also met my anaesthetist. They did try to sell us help gadgets at great expense too, such as grabbers. Amazon is a lot cheaper and better!
I had a partial hip replacement last December. In terms of rehab, it's close to a full. I'm going in for a full replacement + revision (they have to pull the old implant out) this Wednesday, so I fully understand your nervousness.
Recovery from a standard replacement will probably be a lot easier than you're imagining now. Be conscientious in your rehab, but don't overdo it. Take enough pain meds so you can do your rehab, but don't feel like you have to be zoned out. They prescribed oxy for me, and i never used them; 500mg Tylenols were fine.
I've had plenty of people tell me that knee replacements are much more difficult than hip replacements, if that's any consolation.
I was back to riding my bike 6 weeks after my operation. I had a bit of stiffness, but no pain at all. (Unfortunately, I fell on the sidewalk 3 months after the operation, and that caused it to fail, necessitating revision surgery).
Pay close attention to movement restrictions, especially ones where your knee is turned inward. My surgeon told me that's far more important than the 90 degree rule. Twisting the wrong way is a good way to dislocate.
Assuming you can put full weight on the hip, try to get up within a few hours of the surgery. Lying in bed, succumbing to the discomfort, is not a good way to recover. BUT, make sure at first that you have help. As I can attest, falling again is a good way to screw everything up. And once you feel like you've recovered, be much more attentive to where you're walking and what the obstacles are.
I had all that at joint school, apart from being sold items, they were loaned to everyone. The medical was at pre op a seperate appointment.
We were at the hospital for quite a long time, it was quite good having it in one go though as I live quite a way from the hospital. I think the NHS are trying to make money in any way they can in my area nowadays.
Hi to all you fine hippies 👍
Many thanks for all the replies, with advice and hints I'm sure all will go well. ...
All the best to you all...
Stay safe and never let anyone make you afraid...
Pete 😁
Hi Linda 😁
Sounds like you've been waiting enough time for this op, I'm sure all will go well for both of us, all the best for the next couple of months, stay safe and never let anyone make you afraid...
Pete...😀
When in the hospital I found it easy to do ankle rotations and foot movements when I had my iPod music on with in-ear buds - I was toe-tapping to the music in the daytime, and at night when I couldn't sleep.
Hi, my pre op is on 3rd October with my op on the 22nd October, hoping they will explain a few things as haven't been able to attend joint school
Cherilyn,
At my pre op, it was a medical and taking down medical history. Joint school showed us various hip joints used and arranged the loan of equipment to aid recovery. Did you ask the consultant what hip he uses when you saw him, if not, you could always ring his secretary and ask her. Good luck with your op next month.
Think he said it was ceramic? To be honest, when I saw him at the end of July and he said I needed a replacement, I was in shock. Then thought it would take months and months before having it done lol
I know the feeling cherilyn, I had op very quickly after seeing the consultant. mine hip is metal and ceramic, the only reason I asked was because of the metal on metal problems.
Because a lot of people on here are much more aware of proceedure etc than I, It was only at my 6 week check-up with one of the surgeons team I asked the make of hip replacement I had which is a 'charnley' and I mentioned cutting the muscle as people believe with a posterior muscles are cut but, he said my muscle was not cut.
Sometimes knowing less is best. 😊
I had the whole pre op and teaching bit all at once over a period of most of a day. It was quite fun as there were several of us and they explained the op and showed us slides. They also tried to sell us gadgets such as grabbers etc, really expensive and not much good I thought.
