Pred and concern with an existing fungal instance

Hi,

Can anyone offer any insight to the issue or link between taking Pred and having an existing fungal instance.

I have an annoyingly difficult to get rid of toe nail fungus and am a little concerned about this link this has to now taking Pred...does anyone have some advice or insight they can share please?

Buy Curanail for toenails. Paint weekly.  You must do it weekly. It will go it does take time. Not a big deal. Thank goodness socks season has arrived.

Fungal nail infections take a long time to cure. I keep a small dropper bottle of almond oil with essential oils of oregano and lavender added. Rub some into toenails at bedtime and it keeps mine clear. The curanail stuff works too but you have to keep doing it weekly as stated.

Hi Susan,

I like the sound of the almond oil, with oregano and lavender...how long would you recommend this bedtime routine?

Hi Whitefishbay,

The summer and sock season don't tend to be a link for me unless away with the family on holiday in the sun...but this year has indeed been a little different in the UK to previous years so I have had my toenails out a little more often than usual...not an ideal sight really

I have tried something similar to Curanail in the past and got into a relatively regular routine but not much change.

The link with taking Pred is the one that caused me some concern when reading up on the 'do's and dont's which mentioned about having an existing fungal issue and I am not too sure of the what if's now...can anyone add to this at all, or do I have this confused at all which is probably the case.

Normally pred would make it more difficult to get rid of a fungal infection - but that really applies more for systemic ones rather than nail conditions.  But as Susan says - nail fungal conditions take a LONG time to get rid of.

Best to speak to the doctor.

When my nail was a discoloured I did it every night for a few months. Not a problem as its easy and smells lovely. Now I do it couple of times a week and nails are healthy. I think its the oregano thats really effective. Lavender adds to the lovely scent. Just add a few drops of the essential oils to a small dropper bottle of almond oil.

Great stuff...thanks Susan43406

Andy,

I have toenail fungus only on my left big toe and after trying different things, I decided to use tea tree oil (essential oil) every day after I shower on this toenail.   It has been about a month, and half of the fungus is gone (beginning at the bottom of the nail).   I think it may take another month or two to be rid of it completely, but it is working so far.  I have also heard of soaking your feet in Listerine for about ten minutes a day - who knows, it might work.    Good luck to you.

Hi Pam,

thanks for the tea tree oil tip...I used this on one of my toe nails a while back and it seemed to clear this one, eventually. A mix of the tea tree oil and alternate with the suggestion from Susan and switch between this and the almond oil with oregano and lavender sounds a good idea...here is to the natural way of getting rid of this niggle

Thank you for bringing up the dreaded toenail fungus fiasco. I had made it my target this month to find cures.

I got nail fungus not long before I started on Pred. I was using a very good product to rid me of the problem. Pred however, messed with my ability to sleep, so one night, bored to tears. in the early hours, I resorted to actually reading the myriads of instructions that came with the nail treatment. The very last statement, several pages later, said DO NOT USE WITH PREDNISONE. So now, 3 years later, I still have the problem and it is getting worse. The Doctor said I just had to live with it now till I get off  Pred. It has gone below the nail bed and so now needs a drug to cure it as well.

Last month a new Doctor and a med student about to graduate, and the Rheumy all told me I have to do pool excercises and Thai Chi. I have avoided the pool or 3 years because of the dreaded fungus. They all said - get to the pool!  I am mortified about going to the pool with crumbling toenails. I bet everyone else in the pool will be too. The 3 medical professionals all said that no one else can catch it.  Hmmmm

Thank you to all those people who put natural cures on here. I will try them all

Hey Flutterbie,

I have just this moment got home from purchasing the oregano and almond to mix with my lavender and continue alternating this with my tea tree...the road to ridding me of this toenail fungus is now stepping up a gear

Go Andy !  And thankyou Susan
