Prescribed Duavive as I’m severely progesterone intolerant

Hi ladies, this is my first post and I'm really hoping you can help me. I had both ovaries removed 2012 due to severe PMT. Since then I've tried bioIdentical HRT and Utrogestan, tablets and patches. None of these have helped relieve severe menopause symptoms. I'm now taking Duavive, prescribed by NHS Sexual Health Consultant. Trying this as a last resort before considering a hysterectomy. The first week I felt amazing, more energy, positive mood and no sore joints. It's gone dramaticaly down hill in the last 3 weeks, severe low mood, lethargy, insomnia, digestive problems and memory loss. I've decided to stop taking it as I can't cope feeling like this. Sorry for the long post but I'm desperate for any advice or experiences with Duavive. Thank you in advance for reading my post.

Hi Susan welcome to the forum (welcome to the jungle

Firstly how old are you , and is the duavive progesterone only? Ive seen lots of people since ive been on the forum over a year, and many comments are that the hrt works later dissipates, and/or loses its affect. Ive found this to somewhat true for myself.

Has your provider or anyone told you that a hysterectomy would be the solution to the symptoms? I dont know myself but perhaps not? I have a friend who had a hysterectomy in her 20’s due to cancer, and now shes 50, but has plenty of hormonal issues despite having gone through meno very early on.

You will find support here, lots of it. The hardest of the symptoms are obviously emotional, as the lack of or fluctuation of the hormones throws you off constantly, its a very imbalanced, unsettling, unhappy time to be in, for me atleast.

Hi Susan

My circumstances are different to yours but I am also on Duavive. I started on the tablets in August and like you felt great for the first week, more energy, slept great, no aches and pains and my mood lifted, then it changed, not as dramatically as you but my sleep went all-to-pot again and my energy levels slumped. I continued taking them for 2 months, as usually you are told to take them for at least 3 months to see if they work. By the end of 2 months the bloating was so bad, especially my hands, they felt like they were going to explode! I couldn’t get my rings off! So I decided to stop them, and within 3 weeks I was de-bloated, however, interesting for me, what I did notice was that my Asthma and respiratory issues had really improved whilst on the drug and when I came off, all the asthma and respiratory issues returned with a vengeance! So I have started back on it again, I am three weeks in and I can feel the bloating starting again, but not too bad yet and sadly my Asthma hasn’t yet improved either. I am really not sure what to think of Duavive as this is the only HRT I have been given. I plan on giving it 3 months to really see if it all settles down and hoping it helps my Asthma again, but if not, I will come off it and see what else is out there. On a side note, when I came off it and went back to my doctor he just prescribed another HRT called Livial but when I went home and did some research on it, it said it had a steroid in it and that it’s banned in America and Canada so I decided not to go on it!!!

This menopause malarkey has turned my health upside down and I really don’t even know my own body anymore! I was cruising along lucky to be a healthy lady all my life until BAM! from the age of 49 its been all downhill since…and for me the most significant change has been to my respiratory health. I never had asthma until 4 years ago I was diagnosed…at around the same time as Menopause!..plus I have never smoked in my life and nor did my parents. I honestly cannot believe there is not more help out there for us ladies during this major hormonal change!

Best wishes and hope you find something that works for you X
