problem supplementing with betaine hcl

In order to find out if I'm dealing with low stomach acid I have been supplementing with betaine Hcl. The first time I tried a pill (650 mg hcl with 160mg pepsin) I didn't feel any reflux like sensations in the first hour or so after the meal, but after about 3 or 4 hours I felt very sick/nauseous. I then lowered my dose and have now slowly built up to 4 pills (of 650 mg hcl and 160 mg pepsin each) with a large evening meal (roughly 30 grams of protein). I still don't feel any warmth/heat or other reflux sensations but after 3 or 4 hours I still start to feel sick (stomach just doesn't feel right). The feeling can last for many hours. Does anybody know what's going on here and does the fact that I can take 2600 mg of betaine hcl with one meal (without reflux-sensations) definitively prove that I have low stomach acid, or do I need to keep building up to be sure?
