Profuse sweating....

since I've been having such a horrible time with profuse sweating, my daughter's been doing some research for me. she happened upon a medication named 'Robinul' which evidently is mainly prescribed for peptic ulcers, but has been proven to be a good remedy for excessive perspiration! it's being prescribed "off label" for that now. this has been such a HUGE problem for me (wet hair, scalp, and face) terribly embarrassing!!! has anyone heard of this medication or tried it?? what are your thoughts? I'm desperate and ready to try almost anything! side effects??

I should also add, this has ONLY become a problem since prednisone!

I don’t know the answer, Lynda, but I would be interested to know as my husband has terrible problems with sweating. It soaks through his shirts and he feels embarassed because of the large damp patches on both his back and front. It is also linked to medication. I realise it will be a different name in the UK. I hope you have success with this and someone is able to answer your question.

Lynda, honestly I would try anything but yet another medication to add to a cocktail you are already taking. If it is prescribed “off label”, it means that is not approved for this particular need. Everyone sweats with prednisone, some more then the others. I have the same issue and this is what I do…

  1. Drink more then you did before and make sure that you replenish liquid that you sweated out.
  2. Use thin cotton towel, make it damp and put it around your neck. This will cool you down and reduce sweating. You can use it to wipe off face and neck area and keep them cool. Also rinse and re-wet the towel often.
  3. Before going out take a shower and do this several times a day. Don’t use soap except in few places ( arm pits and groin area).
See how that works for you… I have been reading your posts and I would think the last thing you need is yet another medication.

Hi lynda62707

I go along with nick don’t add to your medication. I can remember sweating profusely when on pred. I thought i was going through menopause again but far worse. I always had a cold air fan at the ready and a small hand held one if i went out and i did drink more water. Hot drinks seemed to make me sweat more. Wear cooler clothes and material i.e. cotton that wont exacerbate the heat. Put cooler bedclothes on your bed, i could not have a duvet on me. Use cotton sheets, pillow cases etc. I just had to find ways to try and keep as cool as possible…this is one of the many side effects lynda which will subside and you reduce to lower dose. Try some of the recommendations offered in the replies… good thoughts lynda it will get better…:+1::blush:

thx silver…I’m gonna call my doctor in the am and I’ll get back to you with an answer then!

Lynda, are you being treated for diabetes? Have you been checked? Low or high blood sugar can cause sweating.
Not diagnosing, but I developed diabetes due to prednisone.
No medication is needed, yet, but I do keep tabs on my sugar level.
My dr. diagnosed through an A1c.

Hi Lynda
I Have the same problem with over heating, its more like a fever.
I am so hot all the time, everything I read says prednisone is the culprit.
Lynda I have to agree with Nick as far as not taking extra medication, also he suggests a wet cloth for your neck, that actually works beautifully.
Also Mary’s advice with fans , clothing etc. I have a portable fan the old fashioned type which I keep in my handbag , it’s a life saver.
Good Luck
Vicki

The more medications you take - the higher the risk of interactions and other problems. You have a range of suggestions - you should try them first.

Eileen, you are so right.
Prior to PMR I took one pill.
Am on 14 and hate every one.
Trying to reduce the number!
Even resist the vitamins, but know they are necessary.
Begone, PMR and all the issues that come with it.

hi MariGrace…thankfully no…no diabetes! Wfewww

So, I waited awhile before posting this…I didn’t want to seem ungrateful (to be clear, I’m sooo greatful) or unappreciative of all your advice!
But with all due respect, do you think I’ve NOT TRIED all these helpful little hints?? I have, and they DO (sometimes) work. and it’s one thing to be sitting on the couch folding laundry or relaxing watching tv with a wet towel 'round your neck, then to be going to dinner at a nice restaurant with friends…it doesn’t quite work! or to be shopping and while looking at a beautiful sweater, dropping beads of sweat on it!! to me, that just doesn’t “cut” it.
as far as medications, I take 3 different ones daily (including prednisone). While this isn’t Great, I don’t believe it’s exorbitant or over the top!
In any case, I’ve decided to do some more research before contacting my doctor about the possibility of going on another medication. I just need some relief from this very embarrassing and VERY uncomfortable problem!
I SO hope I’ve not offended anyone or sounded unappreciative of your suggestions…in fact, I could really use some feedback right about now!
thanks for listening…

Btw…taking multiple showers/baths everyday is not usually practical:confused:

Lynda, During the beginning of my PMR, before diagnosis, I would wake up wet in the middle of the night and have to change clothes. I’m sure that was partly the cause of my 20 lb wt loss (a PMR symptom). Gradually, it would just be my head that sweat. Sometimes, when I wasn’t taking enough pred, my head would sweat again at night. I believe it is the PMR announcing itself. You might try increasing the pred a mg or two.

I remember working with a lady many years ago who had a similar problem. She tried so many different ideas but was dripping with sweat which made her life embarassingly unbearable. Eventually her consultant prescribed medication which didn’t clear it completely but improved her life greatly. I’m sorry but I don’t know what it was and there are probably better drugs on the market. I think you should speak to a medic and discuss the problem.

thanks peggy…at the moment I’m trying to do a very SLOW taper (currently on 14.5mg.) but even when I’ve been on higher dosages of pred. (16.5 is my highest dosage thus far) I’ve still had the same problem! as this has never been an issue for me before, I can only assume it’s prednisone driven!
again, just ONE of my many problems with this drug!

thanks silver…could med have been Robinul?? that’s what my daughter found. if so, did your friend have any side effects?

I believe it is the PMR.

agree with most here- i would stay away from adding another med. I am also dealing with this sweating issue but i am trying to be smart about what I wear, and if I feel a flash get to a place where i can step outside to cool off or use a cool cloth. Also if your vitamin D is off it will make your head sweat so get you vitamin D levels right if they are not but I am not looking to add meds unless absolutely needed for very good medical reason. in the big scenario my goal is to get to a place where i am not drug dependent and i realize it may take some time to get there but the fewer drugs I have to eliminate the quicker it MIGHT happen.

Funny thing about the clothes, I was wearing tshirts in the winter and people where saying , aren’t you cold.
I have also been studying the best food to eat that are anti inflammatory . I also take a tumeric tablet each day.
I don’t know if this will help anyone ! but the way I look at it, none of us have anything to lose.
GOOGLE and see what may suit you.
