Protein in urine?

Hi, I have been on omeprazole, with the exception of a few times off for a while, for many years.  I have had other things, like IBS, which I recently got under control by taking Triphala, an herbal supplement which has basically ended that.  I recently had a blood workup and urinalysis and my urine tested for protein and it was a 1, which I have yet to get an answer on what that means.  Has anyone else had this?  And what were you told to do?  I am on a low dose of omeprazole now, 10 mg a day.  Help please!

Hi Julie,

I took Omaprezole for 8 years and have ended up with very little stomach acid. Once this happens, you do not digest protein very well and it starts leaking out through your kidneys. This is the situation I find myself in and have had to put myself on a vegan diet in order to protect my kidneys from further damage as much as possible, although some still does leak out. You can take betaine HCl, a natural supplement which helps boost digestion of protein. I was taking it for a while and it certainly boosted my protein/albumin levels, but I had to stop taking it as my esophagus burst open due to the build up of gas through poor digestion. I have found that eating every 2 hours stops heartburn so there is no need to take a PPI and it would be the worst thing I could do anyway now as it would just make my digestion even worse.

I forgot to say that Betaine HCl usually has a small amount of pepsin added. This is what helps with protein digestion. If you decided to try it, look for one that contains pepsin.
