Protein powder and RA

i am 68 and I just got a personal trainer to try and get some strength back.  I have numerous issues with my back and can't walk without getting spasms.  He suggested I start taking protein powder but what I've read it doesn't seem to be something that those with RA should be taking.  Does anyone know anything about this?

Thank you

That's interesting because I take protein powder every day and doesn't have any bad effects for me.  Anybody else?  Now I'm curious.

I drink regular whey protein without all the extra bodybuilder stuff in it.  My Dr. Said it was good for me because those with RA need more protein to fight muscle loss and weakness. I mix it with milk in the morning and have a protein shake for breakfast and some fruit to get me going.

I'm going to have to research it further.  I have an appointment with rheumy next week and will discuss it with her.  I've recently lost the 30 pounds I gained while on prednisone and need to lose 50 more!  The trainer said that the protein could help with further weight loss as well as being good for muscle development.  My diet is sorely lacking in any  protein!

thank you you for your quick reply!  I will keep you updated on what I find out!

I definitely hear you about the weight loss.  I too need to lose 50 lbs.  Hard to do when I feel exhausted all the time.  I can deal with the pain but the fatigue is a whole other matter for me.  Good luck to you.

I've been extremely lucky!  I am on Enbrel and the only thing that bothers me is some achy wrists and swelling in my hands and ankles.  My doctor decided to try Simponi and it worked for 2 1/2 months then bam it quit!  I had to go in for a prednisone shot for the pain!  I almost headed to the emergency room!  I am back on Envrel and it is working as always!  I've been told that mine Is aggressive.  My RF was 985 when I first was diagnosed!  It is back to 138 now which is still a high positive!  I wish you could get the same results!  Good luck and prayers that you start to feel better!

I have nothing to add but really interested regarding protein being something to consider for muscle loss and damage with RA - may talk to my rheumy about it z

Never thought about that!  Further reading said we need extra protein with RA.  The trainer told me that as I work out that it will help repair my muscles.  I will talk to my rheumy next week.  Also I have an endo doc who told me I need to add more protein to my diet!

Any thoughts on the best tasting?

My nutritionist recommeded isolate whey protein powder as distinct from the usual sort.

He didn't say that it was specifically for RA, though considering he was suggesting a whole slew of supplements knowing I have RA, I'd imagine he had that in mind.

He was altogether against anything that involved milk.

That's the kind my trainer suggested.

thanks
