PSA free percentage test

Hello I would like to know if the free percentage psa test is supposed to be given to men who have psa scores under 2? I recently had a fasting blood and urinalysis and this was included by my Drs nurse on my psa blood work. The reason I am asking is because my psa levels have never been over 0.9 to 1.0 in the last 10-15 years abd I am 67 years old. My free psa percentage came back a little low at 17 percent which has caused me great anxiety and stress. My Dr gave me a DRE with normal results as it usually does. He told me to retest in 6 months??! I have heard that this test is only given with values from 4-10, or even 2.5-10. A urologist does this to rule out any biopsies if needed. My psa was 1.0 why was I subjected to this and without any symptoms of prostate problems. I also have heard that the psa free percent is only conclusive with these higher values and it can fluctuate from 15-25 Please let me know what you think it would be greatly appreciated, frank01771

How is digital rectal exam ?

PSA below 1 is very low for 67 years old. I would think a free PSA is not required. I believe it can be done with the same blood draw, so maybe that’s why he did it. Although it probably costs more.

DIGITAL EXAM NORMAL. Prostate wasnt enlarged and was not hard. No signs of nodules or lumps, etc

Ive inquired with a few urologists who said that this test was not for me and to not let it bother me. It is generally used for men with values from 4-10 to rule out any biopsies if the percentage is 25 or more. My psa is too low and normal to have this test performed on myself. Thanks for your answer.
