Hi every one I am almost 6 weeks post op and doing really great, it feels like I had nothing done, next week I can put more pressure on my hip replacement side ( right) and I am not sure if the physo is going let me walk without crutches or walk without one crutch, I walk with one crutch in the house and I feel great. The physio said I might take them off you. The only plus side is that I will still be walking with a limp because I need to get my lift hip replacement done.
Anyways was just wounding when can new hippes start using public transport like a bus?
Ok thank-you so much, I still need to sit on a chair with arms till next week. I was going to ask my physio a few questions as I have her on Tuesday. Thank-you so much for answering back x
First - congrats on such good progress. I know it means good conscientious work on your part.
I think the main thing is to feel confident. For me, I took my walker on the first few outings as it helped me navigate the press of crowds better and alerted people to me being slower. I soon ditched this unless on longer walks - it gave me more range and a cushion on overestimating my abilities.
Hi, I first went on a bus at about 3 weeks, with my crutches. Since then I've been on tubes and trains. People have been brilliant at offering seats etc. It's great to get out and about. Just went to my 6 week physio, and now don't have crutches or a stick, but feel quite achy when I walk. Seeing consultant next week for x-ray. Good luck!.
Thanks Megan. I'm doing as well as could be hoped with 2nd hip to be done sept 20.☺
I will be very glad to have it done, I must say. Even though I am not looking forward to post op weeks 1-2. 😨😵
But ... no pain, no gain. Or so they say.
I have been feeling pretty well until the last 2 weeks during which it seems as if all my joints have started complaining. However, we have finally had a slight break in the hottest summer ever here and I have been trying to walk out some of the aches and pains.
However still better than pre my first thr which got pretty grim. I have been vastly entertained by several posts by Dot and Sarah and inspired by so many others whose challenges make me feel small to complain.
I hope your recovery continues to go well. And best luck with your second one.
Hi Megan, really good idea to ask your physio about buses. They would give the right advice, because they know how you're doing. Good luck with traveling around. I found the drivers helpful when I had crutches. I've just been on one bus since I gave back my crutches, and it was ok. Good luck.
My own experience was that getting on and off the bus wasn't a big problem but I did find standing at a bus stop with no seating or shelter very uncomfortable. I got round this by cycling to our nearest small town where the bus stop was under cover and had seats and then catching a bus to a larger town about 10 miles away.
I think much depends on what the bus services are like where you live and how far you are from your nearest bus stop - mine is a mile away.
Hi Megan, I'm at about 6 weeks RTHR, glad your feeling good. I know what you mean feels like you had nothing done. I'm almost there. I've been driving and back at work almost 3 weeks, still more comfortable with one crutch. Saw my surgeon a few days ago, he was a little surprised how much I was doing. He said continue using crutch and take it a little easy. Getting in and out of vehicle always careful, tying shoes is still a challenge! Just barely able to lay on surgery side but not for long, and sleep is still a problem. Get a good nights sleep every few days now.
If you can get on and off the bus and the seats are comfortable you should be OK. Just take it slow, I know I feel a lot more secure with one crutch.
Hi Dave thank-you for sharing your experience with me. I am 6 weeks from a right hip replacement too. ( today is 6 weeks). I feel ready to come off the crutches. I've been drying to use pubic transport like a bus as I used to use a bus every day. I am also going to ask when I can I sit in a normal sit. Can you sit on a normal sit now?
