Hi, am expecting my period to start on my THR surgery day or the day before and am not sure how to manage it, any thoughts? i have never taken contraceptive pills and was advised not try them now, also I cant move my surgery day.

How long is it before you go in? Have you a period or so before your date? Reason I ask is the merina (think you spell it) coil you don't have periods, but it does take a month or so to settle down and may need some tablets to help this, but after a month I was period free. Hope this helps and good luck

Can you speak to your GP? As you probably wouldn't have time for it to settle down...

Please don,t worry, the staff should be used to dealing with this. There is no reason you can,t wear pants and a pad, but tampons may be a bit awkward to use to begin with. I would be very wary of trying coils of any kind, it's a bit extreme in your case.
not everyone has an easy time with coils, I,ve seen many patients with problems after having them fitted.
it was a good suggestion to phone the ward, I,m sure they will reassure you.

Oh you poor thing. That is not going to be very convenient. Explain to the female nurses and use a double tampon, ends tied. Then when you come round, have another two at the ready that the nurses can help with. Leave a note on your bed "change tampon" just to be sure and in case you're hazy. Nurses will be up to speed on that. Mine put in a catheter in a nano second. It may be that muscles may involuntarily contract, so make sure the theatre know and your surgeon. They'll have dealt with it all many times before. In fact there may be a diaper anyway and hopefully your op won't go over 4 hours. It'll be ok on the day

I was awake throughout my surgery and the first thing they did was rip my pants off.
I would have thought a tampon would be OK though, but I would check with the ward.
Hi Surafawaz, I had surgery 15 months ago and started the day of surgery !! Your just have to let it happen just bring your supplies .

Thank you all for being so kind, I guess i'll just have to live with it and let the staff know...i was told that taking high dose of vitamin C for a week could bring the period few days earlier
I was expecting mine the day of surgery and it never came. I think maybe the stress held if off. I did bring extra long pads and a size up in panties just in case. Hoping all goes well for you.
Hi. Mine was due on the day of my surgery and I just hoped that the stress of the op would delay it - it did but only by one day. I took tampons with me to hospital but as I still had my catheter in when I started I couldn't use them - had to send hubby to the shops armed with a photo from Sainsbury's web site of what pads I wanted. Nurses were great helping me change them when I needed it.
Hi Sura i am 7 weeks post op and i had mine on the day of the surgery. I did see my GP but she refused to give me any pill for extension as that would not be helpful with the medication after the surgery. So just go with your supplies.
I should have a word with your Doctor. I know I once had an important date and my period was due then, so I went to the doctors and they gave me some tablets to take which stopped the period for 7 days. They told me not to take them for longer or I may grow whiskers on my chin, but 7 days is safe to delay your period. You don't need that as well as a hip replacement so I should see what your GP says. They are not exactly contraceptive pills but something different. It was a few years ago when I had them, so I should make enquiries and see what they say. Good luck. Hope all goes well for you.
I went for 3 months with no period prior to surgery and yup, it re-started the day before. Geesh. They had to do a pregnancy test on me during the pre-op admittng just because I was menustrating at all. Obviously it came back negative at 52 and having my period.
No tampons allowed and no way I could have used them anyway. Big Old pads and I try not to think about the additional emabarassment of having my period as well as the exposing (maybe?) my parts during the lovely hip dislocating move I've heard about. Aaaw, to be a woman. Also, as I needed a cathether due to the spinal it was a little tougher for the poor nurses.
Well, just the way it isand think of it as a teaching experience for the Med staff as this is the wave of he future with us younger women getting more surgery.

you can get tablets from your dr to delay it, you take it for a couple of weeks befor you are due
Hi "csboyd"....I emailed my doctor and see what he says about it whether i can get given some tablets to delay it or just go with it....oh dear I can't imagine the embaressment
Hi Lorraine, i went to the pahrmacy and found medicine that delays the period if taken 3 days before the period date, but also read that should not be taken if an operation is planned, i think it may cause blood clots
