I am 5 weeks today post op. Immediately after surgery I knew something was wrong, when the bottom of my foot was totally numb and as time progressed, my toes don't move, my calf is hypersensitive to touch, and I have neuropathy in my foot. I am having a MR Neurography in 3 weeks, which will show if the nerve is stretched, entrapped, or whatever else could have happened during surgery. My question is has anyone experienced this, and did you fully recover? I would love to hear your stories and with any help you can give me. Thank you.
Hi Gina,
I had thr revision left side Oct 2013 and yes this happened to me, but unfortunately I didn't find out until 6 months after. Like you when I woke up after surgery my foot was numb mine was the top of my foot my calf is numb also. I had EMG test done that showed sciatic nerve damage from surgical site. I have been on disability ever since that surgery. Good thing for you it's still early enough still hope for you to have the nerve repair. Please let me know how your doing and good luck do physical therapy and repair that damage if possible
Best of luck praying for you
Jackie
There are so many of us sharing our stories. I am now going into my 9th week post-op with basically nothing wrong with my left side. I had left hip replacement and it still has some minor pain every so often. I have problems with right leg, middle of leg pain. I still limp and pelvic pains every so often everyone heals differently. It is still early so I am not rushing anything since I thank God things are better. I wish you well. I had a spinal so for about two weeks there was numbness in toes and thigh on side I did not have surgery. It has gone now.
Hi Gina, did you have anterior or posterior approach? I did notice on the surgeon’s notes for me he did mention protecting the sciatic nerve. I am not sure what they do though.
The only thing I really know about nerve damage is that it was on my consent form that I absolved the surgeon of any nerve damage, and I had no idea it was on there.
Best wishes
Graham
My gosh, I should have read the consent form better! I did notice they said they would try to limit the leg length discrepancy though.
Gina,
That's true we all sign form stating possible nerve damage. When I had my first thr way back in 1993 I had no problem surgery went great and I recovered no problem. Fast forward when I needed to have revision unfortunately I did get nerve damage sciatic nerve damage. Usually if the damage is caught early there's better chance of repair. My advice would be to do your research before having any surgery get 2 and maybe 3rd opinions
Take care
Jackie
I am praying for you!
I had anterior because I thought I would be up and around quicker. I will let everyone here know what my MR Neurography shows after I have it. I have no change in my neuropathy in my foot which is painful, but thankful being helped by Lyrica 3 times a day. It's not 100%, but it does dull it some.
I too had a EMG test and a needle test where the needle is inserted deeply and touches the nerve. The EMG showed sciatic nerve problems and where it branches off below the knee, showed no action to the nerve that goes to the bottom of my foot, hence the total numbness. It also showed another nerve that was affected and it is the reason I have hypersensitivity to my calf. I am trying to get as many tests done early so I can hopefully get this fixed and go on with my life.
Hi Gina,
Good for you don't give up it's exhausting. Physical therapy does help stay strong im praying for you
Thank you
Jackie
Yes, it's hardly something you are going to analyse when they thrust it under your nose as you prepare to go into surgery is it?
I certainly had no real idea just what I was signing away.
I suppose we did not really have much choice, don’t sign and no op. I cannot believe that they would amend the terms if we complained!!
Signing under duress - I wonder if it would hold up?
Depends who has the better lawyer!!
