Radioactive Iodine Treatment

Hi there, can anyone tell me if they have had radioactive iodine treatment...my specialist is wanting me to have this. I have hyperthyroidism....about 2 to 3 years ago I was diagnosed but for it under control with meds and eventually came off them. Last Nov/Dec I became very I'll....palpitations, nausea, shaking and collapsing. I ended up in hospital and was diagnosed again with overactive thyroid.

Hi!

I had the something happen I was soooo ill. Im sorry your going through this. I did the RAI and I am so glad I did the bad symptoms outweighed trying to control it. Its super easy you drink a small shot of the radioactive iodine and it goes straight to your thyroid because they put the iodine in there aka salt and your thyroid drinks it up. it took me about a month to go hypo and I started on a small amount of synthoird, they will watch you until your thyroid numbers are normal. Sometimes they can just give you a little of the RAI to stop it from being hyper. I had graves disease so I had to do the hole amount. Once you get your numbers straight you will feel great again!

WOW, I am thinking about having the radioactive iodine treatment. I have researched it a little, and as miserable as I feel now, I would rather have hypothyroidism, as it is far better to take a pill. My advice would be to discuss your concerns with the specialist, then you can make an educated choice.

Take care

Arlea

thanks x Can I ask were you kept in for quarantine or left go home? I have 2 young children and I am scared of any health implications for them

Thanks Arles....can I ask why you have come to that conclusion? From the literature my specialist gave me there didn't seem to be any long term complications....other than going hypo. He also told me that if I continue the way I am with my heart beating this fast I am potentially taking 15 to 29 years off my lifespan

Sorry spelt your name wrong

I am thinking about it. I am reading up on it as I haven’t seen an Endocrinologist yet. I am waiting until July 31st. for my first appointment, and I will learn more. I am unable to do much. I also have COPD, and this happening to me has worsened my breathing, and the shaking, heart palpitations are, well you probably know. Itisjust the wait that is getting to me. However, I am thankful to be on this site. Many of you have helped with the anxiety.

i do understand your anxiety also with your heart. God bless

Can I ask when you said so ill what where all of ur symptoms and how long until u felt normal .... I spent 4 days in hospital due to this ugly overactive thiord

Hi Gary, I had palpitations, shaking hands, severe fatigue, dizziness and I collapsed 3 times. My heart rate was over 110.....ive been on 30mg of neomercazole now for a few months and my heart resting is 96. I still have the symptoms but milder than they were

Yep it's scary really isn't it. the endrochronologist said there are 2 choices surgery or the radioactive iodine treatment....he advised more things can go wrong with the surgery. He has recommended the Rai treatment......i have 2 young boys and as he put it I have to think about the long game and be around for them

I think that is best Dawn. I am just concerned about whether I will still be alive by July 31st.!

I looked in my area to see if I could get an appointment with another Endocrinologist, but unfortunately the only ones I found would be at least 3 hours away. I am going down hill fast. I can’t do anything without getting my heart thumping. It is scary..
