I was competing at the national karate championship when i heard i pop on my foot, i fell down and cant walk anymore. I went to othopedic specialist and was told i suffered tendon raptured, i was put to a full cast and will come back after 3 weeks. Its been more than two weeks now and i dont feel pain and dont have swelling. I was surprised when my doctor told me that i dont need surgery anymore, just not sure if i can still go back to kareta training with the same intensity as before. Anyone here experience the same issue? How long is the recovery period?
I it is a rupture then you will be in plaster for up to 8 weeks in reducing Equus position (toe down)and then in an air boot with wedges for several months. I would not do any martial arts training without seeking professional physio advice, you run the risk of a re-rupture. if you have been told that surgery is not required it is possible that it is a partial rupture and conservative treatment is prescribed, however speak to the surgeon before any form of training. I was on a conservative regime and went for a walk after 3 months stepped onto a curb with the ball of my foot tried to push up and re-ruptured the tendon completely, now 5 weeks post surgery and in the 3rd cast another 3-4 weeks in plaster with up to 12 months in an air boot with Physio.
Take care and seek advice from a professional
Oh thank you brian, yeah right , i guess i was only on a partial tear, i really appreaciate your advice. Cheers
Hi there, my daughter had a 75% cut to her Achilles and had surgery. They are treating hers as a full tear as she is a dancer and wants to be able to go back on pointe and do those explosive movements again. She is 11 weeks post op and is having lots of physio. They've told her the tendon will be fully knitted at around week 20, but no normal dance until the end of the year. As dance is very similar to karate i would be very cautious about going back to quickly to training.
Thanks tracy, thats my greatest fear also as i am a very competetive athlete. I am afraid i cant go back to intense training anymore. I am also thinking of diverting to different sport. I would see how my foot progress after 3 weeks, not even sure if i would still undergo surgery or not after 3 weeks. But like others, i am feeling worried about after the healing process and come back to training and get re rupture.i was reading university experiment on surgery vs conservative treatment, which resulted to almost the same outcome, but the non surgical heals longer than surgical. I am hoping for the best result with conservative treatment. Thanks
