Hi am due for new hip joint in the next few weeks, was optimistic, but now reading all your bad experiences am worried!! However, I noticed a lot of you are suffering from nerve damage and want to know if any of you have asked about removing relevant nerve, the reason I ask is that about ten years ago i had terrible arthritis in the base of my thumb, I was given the option of surgery leaving me with a floppy thumb, or take part in trials just to remove the nerve, which I opted for. Fantastic!! Not a moment of pain since!!! I would love to think this could be feasible for some of you, my bedt wishes to you all

please dont let the small number of people who have complications put you off . Yes the surgerys tough , yes the getting better can be hard going at times with some days feeling like youve taken 4 steps backward , but the forum is here for us all to share these frustrations and moments of despair . We all get there in the end and the vast majority of people are happy with the end result. I havent had any nerve damage so cannot comment on your suggestion - however most people have the surgery fir OA , bone on bone pain where the joint has beeb damaged / destroyed - nerve removal wouldnt stop that pain , although short term steroid/ local anaesthetic injections can help delay surgery - plus nerve pathways run from the extremeties - feet/ hands up to the brain so nerve removal would maybe stop sensation / function in other parts of the leg as well. The thumb is an extremity so nothing else would be affected. Hand surgery has moved on in leaps and bounds in recent years and they can do all sorts of clever things such as you describe - am glad its worked for you so well. Nerve damage can be a complication of surgery and has to be dealt with on an individual basis depending on the effect it has caused.
Please do stay optimistic re your impemding hipsurgery - lots of people have no post op problems at all and I am sure you,ll be fine - but the forum is here for you to share your experience, give and receive tips and for moral support if you need it .

I'm came here 1 year ago after I was told i needed a new hip (will be in June I hope). I felt as you do. I put it off until I couldn't stand the pain. What I discovered in this past year is, most folks with no problems just go away and don't post anymore. They are back to living their life! A few wonderful generous folk stick around to help us newbies. So most posts are others needing help, support or someone who understands what you are going through. There are not a lot of people with nerve damage compared to how many of these operations are done. Anyway, dont let these posts scare you.

Please don't be put off,there are good and bad areas and whatever someone will be there to help but that does not mean you will have any trouble.
I had mine15 weeks ago and I feel great, tired yes but great, more mobility and NO OA pain.
Take it as it comes, do what the docs and physios tell you, you'll be fine.

I am almost 4 weeks post op and I am glad to say that so far (touch wood) I have not had any major issues or complications. Before the surgery I was terrified of the prospect, however discussing it on here and with others who have had the surgery was a invaluable. Once I went the surgery I kind of went in to autopilot as I new it was happening. It was over before I new it.
I still have a long road in front of me, but I do not regret getting it done and even now am starting to realise the benefits.

Hi carol please don't be put off x I had my right hip done in DEC and believe you me I was terrified but all went OK and thankfully I had this forum of lovely people to help me through x I am due my left one to be done in July very nervous again but a bit more prepared this time:-) I'm not going to lie the first few weeks are tough an emotional roller coaster but I can assure you it turns out just fine and all that horrid arthritic pain will be gone forever :-) that's the lovely part so good luck with your surgery and recovery xx

Please dont be discouraged by the posts on this forum. As others have said mainly people with problems who post and seek advice. I can vouch for the fact that I am making a good recovery since my op in Fenruary. I am back working full time and so I dont have as much time as I would like to keep up with this forum. I do dip in and out though and it has helped me lots.
