Reaction with antihistamines

Hi there been on 10 mg for 3 years now which has helped me at lot. Have tried to come off unsuccessfully but GP has agreed I should stay on until next spring as I have recently lost my mum. Coming off when so recently bereaved would not be good. Due to the season I have taken an antihistamine. Don't need them much, maybe one every few days if the pollen count is high. Took one yesterday and felt terrible, very depressed. Is there anything to say it reacts with citalopram, or is it just coincidence. I haven't taken any today and feel a bit better.

Hi Sally, there can be interactions with certain antihistamines, just check google which tells you which antihistamines are problematic. You could switch to one which doesn't react. For peace of mind speak to your chemist they will know.

Hi Sally,

I take Fexofenadine alongside Citalopram with no problems.  It's Prescription Only so you need to see your GP and it's available in two strengths 120mg and 180mg.  I take the 120mg dose daily.

used to take Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin) all summer, on prescription. Made me tired all summer, a chemical taste in mouth and some constipation.

So I bought some Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) few years back to try instead, and it was totally different, no horrible side effects and starts working within the hour.

I am 42 and have had hayfever for at least the last 20 (been on CIt for 3 1/2 years) years and get a tight chest and mild ashma with it too (been given ashma pumps) but on the Benadryl I am fine! So try a few if you cant get on with yours

Not heard anything about that. I take sleeping tablets which are anti histamine based and seems to be ok. Sounds like good advice to stay on them. I was too quick to come off them hence the recent crash. Stick with it x

Well Loratadine  is the antihistamine I'm taking because it's meant to be non drowsy. My sleep is really poor at the moment. So it certainly isn't making me tired just felt terribly depressed. This could just be my grief. I don't need to take it daily and have felt better since I had it 48 days ago. Going to avoid taking them as hoping pollen counts are really coming down due to the poor weather. Off to Scotland in a week so hope it's ok there.

My daughter takes them an seems ok . In regards mood effects I am not sure, but didnt work well with me. It may off just been the constipation making me ill.
