So I've been suffering from IBS for about a year now, which has been 'confirmed' via ultrasound, colonoscopy, endoscopy, multiple blood tests etc. The only thing discovered was a slight hiatus hernia in the endo.
Now the only symptoms I'm getting are extreme flatulance usually after eating which will last for ages and even when not having eaten sometimes.
I also suffer from inconsistent bowel habits and a slight pain on right side under rib as my other symptoms.
Now, my question is what can I do about the flatulance? It's very annoying and is a very embarrassing issue at times. And can mass flatulance ever lead to any problems/be a problem in itself?
I'm pretty young and in good health apart from this.
Thanks in advance.
Hi friend, have you been tested for Coeliac Disease? It's an autoimmune disorder that can have over 300 symptoms. Do you have any other symptoms? Joint pain, mouth sores, dry eyes/mouth, skin conditions, fatigue, inability to concentrate, muscle cramps, headaches?
Hi Jack i have pain in the same place as you and some flatulance but have have diverticula .
Hi there. Yeah I was tested for coeliacs via blood tests and they came back negative.
K, did you load up on gluten for at least a week prior? Very important. I've heard of many who had a neg result the first time.
Hey Jack,
I'm having the same problems as you, no matter what i eat, don't eat, sucks.
I'd recommend you try out Colpermin IBS tablets. I got recommended them by a pharmacist in Boots and so far they do help significantly when taken as soon as the discomfort starts. My G.P had nothing to prescribe for me so I'm still researching potential remedies. Here's a link on the nhs website with meds which could help:
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Flatulence/Pages/MedicineGuidePage.aspx
I advise you research them in depth and select one which is suited to you. I've already tried windsetlers on the list and that did nothing for me but you can always try them out to see if they work for you.I'm thinking of trying charcoal tablets next as I've heard they absorb the gas (downside, they could absorb other medicines, making them less effective).
Probiotics seem good too, you can get them in yoghurts. If you haven't cut out fizzy drinks already, it's a definite must, its hard at first but you get used to it. For me personally, it seems anxiety makes it worse, not sure if its in my head or not but who knows with IBS.
Hope you find something that helps and if i do, i'll make sure to update you.
hiya
flatulance, lots of it and very smelly was what drove me to pay to see a dietician. the cramps bloating and constiation i could live with.
try the low fodmap diet - it pretty much got rid of mine but i will still get a bit when im very constipated or about to have an episode of diarrhoea, which i think it just due to intestinal spasms.
Sorry you have this issue too; the only difference between yours and mine is that mine erupts whenever I doze off, no matter where I am. It is so bad that it causes me bouts of embarrassment in places I wouldn't want it to escape. So, I feel your pain and wish I could help. I have zero solution for mine till this day, and it's been on for years now.
Hi Jack. Sorry this message is coming late, but I just came across it. Beside the embarrassment that it causes, there's really nothing wrong with flatulence; it's a natural occurrence, which sadly people like to deny happens to them.
I'm a sufferer of high levels of flatulence, which has publicly embarrassed me on countless occasions. I have all the symptoms you mentioned, except for the pains in the rib region. To be very honest with you, beside the embarrassment that it causes me, I wouldn't really care about the frequency of the episodes it puts me through.
I had colonoscopy performed, but it didn't help me I any way. They didn't give me any diagnosis, but I strongly believe that what I have is IBS. So, you're not alone on this.
