I was diagnosed with GH this week and am honestly stumped as to how I contracted it. My partner and I have been in a monogamous relationship for 8 years. We lost our virginity to each other and I completely believe that he hasn't cheated on me at any point of our relationship. He has had no previous sexual contact with anyone whereas I had oral sex once with a guy 9 years ago and this has been my only other sexual experience outside of my relationship. Is this the cause of my recent initial outbreak?
I lead a stressful lifestyle and although I am having a particularly difficult time at the moment I am surprised that this disease has been dormant for 9 years, through numerous flues and stresses. My doctor was completely unsupportive, suggesting that my partner or I must have cheated but this is absolutely not the case. Has anyone else had a case like this?
All I can tell you is what the doctor told me- Cold sores are a type of herpes so it is entirely possible that the time you had oral sex you could have contracted it if he had an outbreak at the time. You can easily spread the sores from mouth to other areas if you arent careful or are unaware of the contagious factor. Or even if you and your current partner have now or have ever had cold sores you can spread it to genitals by preforming oral sex with each other. My doctor also said that some people can have it for years and years before ever getting an outbreak. My best guess is that I had it about 4 years before a full outbreak occured. (I had had some itching before but it never blew up and I never would have guessed it was herpes) It is managable to live with, I have been lucky and only had 1 more outbreak since I was diagnosed 5 months ago.

Thank you so much for replying, you have settled my mind somewhat as I have had the occasional cold sore (usually over winter) for as long as I can remember. I have to admit the diagnosis was a shock and the attitude of my doctor was so unhelpful. My boyfriend is being really supportive but I am still pretty grossed out!
Common consensus is that Mouth and Genital herpes are not interchangeable - I am not so sure
People can have herpes for many years before it appears
Many people who have herpes do not show symptoms but you can still contract it from them - its a nasty little disease
Get healthy - no smoking, alcohol, junk food, sugar etc,. etc.
Don't do too much gym
Stay out of cold when possible
Look into "Singles vaccine" as I am told can relive symptoms
Buy Virulite for cold sores - super device works like magic
