Really need some help and advice on this one please..

In the middle of July I had a bad bout of diarreah which lasted 3 weeks, everything I ate came straight back out and I had terrible stomach pain, before this bout I was having really foul smelling wind/gas which I still occasionally get. I began to take a probiotic and the diarreah stopped but instead, for a couple of weeks I would not have a bowel movement for 3 days then I would and it would be a solid movement (not constipated).

Most of my pain seems to be upper abdominal around the rib cage and focuse a bit more onto the right hand side. At the moment bowel movements seem a bit more normal and regular (1 a day) but the dull ache and bloating feeling is still there and it is constantly there. I still exercise  regularly and eat very well. Part of me wonders if I have made my gut hypersenstive as before July I cut out Gluten, Eggs and Dairy as was told intolerant, then I had a stag do, wedding and holiday where alcohol was consumed and some of these foods and the diarreah started a week after the stag do, normally I dont drink that much at all and I feel this may have upset my gut balance?

My blood tests have come back with no inflammatory markers, and the stool test  had when I had diarreah came back normal so no virus. I am waiting to have a sigmoidoscopy as I think GP wants to rule out Colitis.

Wondered if anyone has anything similar, my general diet is , gluten free oats with cinnamon and blueberries for brekkie, chicken salad with g'f wrap, dinner normally a good piece of lean meat/protein with brocolli, basmati rice and veg. I eat lots of fruit and snack on g/f oat bars and pulsin bars. I drink plenty of water and peppermint tea.

Does anyone have an idea of what it is, when I google I get stuff like gastritis, IBS, ulcerative collitis etc...

any help greatly appreciated..

Hi matt

I think you'r being your own good doctor...you'r asking th right quesions..taking care and are fully aware of abuse o your body...which presumeably you propose to end?

All disease starts in the bowel.

Carry on with the probiotics, cut out all grains including oats...and b wary of dairy.

Whatever you may have been heading for you could divert. I wouldn't have a coloscopy...just treat yourself for inflammation and keep a lid on unsuitable activities...you can do it. Others will admire your xampl and follow suit...eventually. Be  a leader

Thanks for the advice. I had the stool sample which ruled out an infection so I'm not sure if it is that. Currently doing the low fodmap diet and have inadvertently been eating a vey similar diet anyway over the last few months so it hasn't really improved my symptoms as much as I hoped.

welcome...but what about h. pylori ?

if you're not responding to the low FODMAP....tough diet that! you are clearly motivated....it can hide in the stomach and tends to break out in the way you describe.

But would the loose stool sample I supplied show this up in the tests? I was told no sign of infection.

H.PYLORI has got smart about hiding and can move from the stomach...its preferred seat of concealment... to the colon.

if you had it i would not treat it with anti biotics necessarily...tho i wouldn't rule out that option either....there are alternative ways of dealing with h.py  but it can escape detection so a neg result is unreliable...but you know matt...i wouldn't worry too much about it...you can increase your stomach acid with a good diet - that alone can knock this on the head - you are doing really well with your own management.

clearly you have done some research so why not share with us your own intuitive thoughts and instincts from what yoiu have experienced with what you have read. this will encourage you to take control of your health...which is were the future of medecine lies...with medical partnering to facilitate patient well being. you become your own expert.

taking probiotics was inspired so i would like to applaud you. check out recipes for coconut kefir...get into wierdness and see others follow your good sense rather than be a slave to the stag do mind set...you're better than that and can drag your friends up with you.

how about de-toxing, supplementation and going paleo? what have you uncovered about these areas that you might choose to deploy?

get back with details of your prospective methods...but don't let anyone mess with your bowel...for god's sake. its the seat of your 2nd brain.
