REALLY SCARED DO I HAVE GENITAL HERPES?!

A month about, ( 27 days to be exact ), my boyfriend of two years and I, engaged in oral sex. A few days later, he revealed that he had canker sores in his mouth. He had three all in different parts of his mouth. He got a new retainer and he said it irratated his mouth and cut his gums also. Of course, I became very alarmed and began to panic. He gets coldsores on occasion and I have become paranoid that they were coldsores instead, even though they didn’t show the typical traits of one, such as pus, ulceration, etc. He said they only felt pain when he ate.

I felt fine until he told me. I got a head cold a few days later from what I’m assuming was work. Two of colleague were also sick that week. I began to google symptoms of genital herpes and as soon as I saw flu-like symptoms listed, I began to panic. I began to check ‘down there’ atleast twice a day and it looked perfectly fine. Then as the weeks went on, about maybe 3 weeks later, I developed another cold. Both of my sisters were sick and I live at home. So I’m unsure whether it could be herpes or ive just caught it off them. I then developed aches and shooting pains throughout my body ( including a slight shooting pain ‘down there’ ), stomach cramps ( however i am due my period ) , a headache, sore throat and the gland near my armpit swelled as did my neck glands. I haven’t experiened any pains in vaginal area such as itchy, burning, or tingling, nor have I gotten sores and it doesn’t hurt when I go to the toilet, and as I mentioned it has nearly been a month since possibly exposure.

I have made an appointment with my gynecologist and plan to inform her of these symptoms and hopefully get a blood test done. I am on the contraceptive pill, so I am unsure whether some of symptoms could be from that.

Please give your opinion and your advice. I would be really grateful as I am very stressed and obsess about this as each day passes. I am also a very paranoid person. Maybe stress might be contributing also.

Hello @megan42110.

Stressing out about it isn't doing you or your body any good. If you contracted the virus most people show symptoms 2-4weeks later. But it may not be detectable in a blood test (igG -antigens) for up to 12-16weeks.

"The challenge here is that the time it takes for IgG antibodies to reach detectable levels can vary from person to person. For one person, it could take just a few weeks, while it could take a few months for another. So even with the accurate tests, a person could receive a false negative if the test is taken too soon after contracting the virus. For the most accurate test result, it is recommended to wait 12 – 16 weeks from the last possible date of exposure before getting an accurate, type-specific blood test in order to allow enough time for antibodies to reach detectable levels."

In my case (diagnosed with HSV1-genitally last week), during my primary outbreak I had no flu-like symptoms, only itchiness and then 2 days later the blisters rolleyes. My body and energy levels were fine, just the irritation of the blisters for a few days. I have been with my boyfriend for 8 months, he had no idea he was a carrier for HSV1 but we practice oral on occasion since beginning the relationship. It took 8 months for me to get HSV1, after my diagnosis my Dr. recommended he also be tested, and it turned out he is a carrier (positive igG test). My igG was negative, as I have yet to develop the antigens for HSV1 (a false-negative will happen if you test too early), but I had a swab culture performed to a blister and I tested positive for HSV1 that way (a guarantee unfortunately).

Good luck with everything,

Rosalyn

I panicked as well but until you take your tests and get results, you'll just have to wait it out. I'm sure we all had to go through this waiting process. It was the last test my gyn performed, they tested me for everything that I didn't have. Smh
