I've been getting checked out as my Dr wants to put me forward to have a gastric band fitted and during my pre op bloods they've discovered I'm vitamin D deficient! Shocked me a bit because I've suffered with my weight since I was 8...now at almost 26 they've only just found it out!! I'm on 20,000 and then dropping to 800 (so I think!) i suffer badly with depression, tiredness, restless legs and cramping, and most importantly my weight. No matter what diet I follow it never seems to budge.. Maybe a few lb here and there but it goes on as quick as it comes off..
My question is, has anyone had a positive outcome in regards to weight loss and depression from taking vitamin d?!? Any help appreciated. X

If they found out only at the age of 26 that you're vitamin D deficient it means you were not before. There are a lot of factors that cause vitamin D defficiency among those are lack of exposure to sunlight.
Personally, I had no experience with weight loss, but from my research it seems vitamin D helps a lot with depression especially if you're lacking it..so if blood tests show this than you have no choice but take the recommended doses until your next blood test to check if you improved and accordingly you will know what to do.
A simple research will tell you the benefits of vitamin D...in case you are defficient, among those:
- it acts against depression
- boosts your immune system
- works to prevent multple sceloris
- helps to fortify your bones
Etc..
That is my personal knowledge.

Apparently twenty five per cent of the population is vitamin D deficient. Being overweight it seems can exacerbate it. Sounds like you are now sorted out, although it takes around three months to get any benefit. Do you know what your measurement result was from your blood test? I normally ask for a printout.
It's a shame they don't do vitamin D blood tests as a standard on the NHS..ive only found I'm deficient after requesting it,my levels are 13ng..im not sure how long I've had it,it's only now I'm coming down with symptoms.
They reckon that 25% of the population are deficient. It is recommended that everyone takes vit D during the winter and buys it over the counter. The cost of doing vit D tests on the NHS for everyone would be horrendous. You can always have it done privately. My local chemist was doing tests for twelve pounds a go recently with the first twelve people free.
