Recovery from bimalleolar fractures.

It is 11 weeks since I had a simple fall and broke 2 bones in both ankles. The left was a spiral fracture of fibula. Both legs plastered to knee non weight bearing for 6 weeks, no surgery. At 8 weeks I was told left leg is still painful as bone is well on the way but not completely healed yet but continue weight bearing. I have physio twice a week but am surprised at how much my ankles swell and how painful they are. I seem to have reached a plateau and expected to be over it by now. Breaking both at the same time hasn't been easy and I am pleased to be walking but fed up with constant aching and stiffness. I am 63 and usually very active. Any ideas gratefully received!!

Sorry to hear. You will have a long road to recovery. Patience, some support and some new hobbies. I broke my Fibula 3 summers ago. Still gets red and swollen, but it is getting their. I completely snapped and displaced it, and Ambulance paramedic wouldn't take me, and I fell unconscious to floor. And broke a rib.

Good news for you is that your fibula is healing. Mine didn't and I needed a bonegraft, plate and 6 screws. I need them out again.

Hope other people reply. This site was all that kept me going for a very long time. Good Luck @(*+*)@

The life saver for me has been wearing compression stockings almost all the time. Mine are not the ultra tight hospital ones but I’d say a medium compression that many people who stand on their feet all day use. I got them off Amazon. There is just enough compression in them so it is a tiny bit hard to pull on foot/leg. I take it and my boot off a couple of times a day to air out and wiggle my toes. The socks really help with the swelling and the pain.
