Recovery is slow for me

I’m 10 weeks post TRHreplacement this Friday. I dont feel as though I’m making as much progress as I should be. My 6 week appointment with the consultant was postponed until 8 weeks which is also the first time I saw the PT. Until then I was on mostly two crutches. PT told me to ditch the crutches and use a walking stick which I have been doing for nearly two weeks now. I am also trying to do some walking ( mostly around the house) without the stick. Also been practising some gentle. squats. My operated thigh is still very stiff and I feel a lost of discomfort in the groin area too. I also have a limp. I am 65 and was in a lot of discomfort/pain for over a year before the operation so its been some time since I have been able to do much exercise. Do you think I’m expecting too much too soon?

Hi Jillie, recovery is different for everyone. I am 63, 8 weeks post op and using cane while out , driving, doing house work, going to gym 3 x week. I also was in pain for over a year before surgery. Stayed active as possible before surgery (pain really keeps you down though). I still have stiffness, no pain unless I over do the exercise and then it is muscle pain…From what I have heard from the information and experience on this site it takes time, exercise and a lot of patience, but all worth it! by the way, I started PT at 2 weeks post op. Rest when you need to exercise when you can. You will get there.

HI I am 7 weeks post op and not seen consultant yet i have good days and bad days depends on how much i do. Walk around home with out crutch but outside with and still have slight limp and stiffness

hi jilly I’m 8 weeks post OP tomorrow. I’ve learnt thro here that were all different and will heal and re learn to walk independently at different rates. I’m still using 2 crutches in side as well as outside as my bad leg just isn’t strong enough for one yet. I’ve got myself some sticks but even with them feel wobberly which is what the dr at the hospital sd. I’m convinced a quicker recovery is dependent on how good your leg muscles were pre OP. as I’d become almost immobile due to pain but also leg muscle having virtually no power I’m not surprised I’m how I am atm. my advice to any pre OP folk is to do the post OP exercises as early as you can pre OP which I didn’t cos of what I’ve already sd.
my understanding is tho if you’re limping you still need some aid to walk and the dr sd to me that you’re more at risk of falling if you limp as well.
but anyway even tho you may not be as far on as you thought youd be the way I look at it I have the benefit of virtually no pain and even tho I’m using crutches I’ve walked distances I’ve not for a long time.
good luck to your continued recovery. dont forget it can take up to a year to fully recover

hi Julie

everyone heals at a different rate so dont worry about that
i had 2 ThRS 2 years ago (48) right done 1st no pain at all 7 months later left one done and every now and again i get a bit of discomfort all due to the extensive work on that side
docs told me it will take its time
iam sure you are worrying about nothing
keep doing your exercises and walking
hope this helps in some small way

Donny

i was told it can take up to 18 months to fully recover

hi. think that varies a lot as well lol. main thing is that altho we may think were healed internally it takes longer than what most of us think.

i just had a hip revision after a year. I too had pain in groin for a very long time. I had pain in mid thigh and had nerve damage. I had a limp right after the first surgery. The surgery on my hip leg was longer. I guess you will need x-rays soon and they can tell if there is a leg length discrepancy. My first surgeon did not want to see that. It takes a while for stiffness to go away. I was put on physical therapy immediately after surgery both times.

Everyone is different. I have friends who had total hip replacement in our age group and were great after 6-8 weeks. I wasn’t that lucky at all. I was limping for a year and it is a little too soon to see if this revision surgery was successful. But you should call your doctor and do the exercises.

Hope you improve. Are you in US?

I was lucky enough to have weekly physio provided by the hospital I was in. They also did some follow ups. I have done and am still doing a lot of stretching, (unfortunately being back at work not stretching as much as I would like) and sergeon, on 6 week check said that it takes a year to recover fully. We all recover differently and seema that we all get different advice and post op treatment. Take your time and you will get there, despite the phsyio through hospital, I went back to my private oseopath and that has helped to. It does also help on how strong you were before and at one point I never thought that I would walk unaided again. Good luck, you will get there.
