Rectocele diagnosed...tissue started bulging from bum

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Rectocele last month and am awaiting physio in the hope that this might help things. I have always had the bulge coming down and out of my vagina which is what prompted me to start getting a diagnosis of the rectocele. However the past week my stomach has been particularly painful in the same places as usual the lower abdomen middle and right side in particular for me and I have found that when I have a bowel movement that my anus seems to bulge. Initially I was like oh crap I've got a hemerroid but it's not like a little thing its like my anus kind of turn inside out which is just awful to say. It's not painful at all other than my stomach pains it just feels like I need to have a bowel movement and I feel extremely bloated. Is this a rectal prolapse? I'm not really sure what to do here and would just really appreciate advice. I don't know if its a cause for concern or nothing to worry about. I know i will be told to go to the drs but my drs are so busy they are booked up until January!

Any advice would be great.

Thank you so much Xx

Hi, I would go for the physio appt as she might have more info for you if you ask her. If you think it's getting really bad and affecting bowel movements try to get an appointment with GP as soon as poss. It's probably happening because you strain during a BM and the inner tissues come down down with stool. Try lying down and doing some pelvic floor exercises after, as you probably learnt after childbirth. They help tighten things up. Your physio will show you how to do them properly for best effect when you see her. No lifting or heavy stuff which puts more strain on the pelvic floor muscles in the meantime. Also try taking stool softeners or gentle laxatives. Go to the top of this page and click on 'Genitourinary Prolapse' and follow links for more info. Best wishes P. x rolleyes

Also you can try natural greek yogurt like 'Total'! It helps keep you BM's soft and regular and ease passing them. smile

Thank you for your reply I will wait till I get the appointment with the pysio and hopefully she will be able to help. I haven't had a baby so not learnt any pelvic floor techniques will I just be able to find these online or are they very specific? I have the prolapse from chronic constipation since childhood I am taking laxatives but very little works. I will look for a dairy free alternative to the greek yoghurt. Definitely at the point of trying anything. Thank you so much. =) Xx

Mine was kinda like that before op...

Did you have to have the physio before you had your op or did you just have the surgery? My colorectal surgeon said he wanted to try the physio first as I'm young (26) and my constipation is proving difficult to resolve so may hinder the healing of the surgery.

Sounds like you now have a rectal prolapse from your anus now not just posterior vaginal prolapse

I did have physio before op. It is really helpful in learning new tips for constipation and proper way of doing things

Good to know! I'll look forward to my appointment now. Many thanks

Thanks for your reply barbara. Do you think it is something that can wait until my physio appointment baring in my I have been told she has a very long waiting list so who knows when this will be. I am just not quite sure if this is something I need to worry about as I do worry a lot.

Please don't jump to conclusions until its confirmed by md. As I said before mine was like that after having a bm

I would pop and see your gp

I think you can find pelvic floor exercises on You Tube plus Kegels. Try googling it and see what happens. Someone else might come on with advice about them, it's difficult to tell you really, you do need a physio. I would still ask a nurse or Doc to look at your latest problem in case it is a rectal prolapse. It might need more urgent care. xrolleyes

Thank you Polly. I am a very anxious person and find it difficult knowing what to do in these situations due to mental health issues. I do really appreciate your reply. Many thanks. =)
