Red blotchy marks on lower legs

My mother has noticed red blotches on her lower legs, on the inside in particular.

It's not really a rash, as the skin isn't dry, itchy or broken.

Her lower legs and ankles are also a but swollen, she's not sure how long the they've been that way.

She's going to call the doctor, but asking here to see if we can find out what a possible cause might be, and whether to ask for a same day appointment or one in a few weeks.

Thank you in advance

Not easy to say what it is without a picture but it may be "Golfers vasculitis".   Quite common if you walk a lot or are on your feet a lot and are in the older age group, and yes, golfers do sometimes get it!.    She may get a diuretic medication from the doctor,to help shift some of the fluid but he/she will also check her blood pressure and may also want to do blood tests.

Get her to lay on her back on the bed or floor and elevate her legs as high as possible above her head. Almost vertical up against a wall is ideal. Then get her to massage her legs in a downward motion. Nothing will happen straightaway but it will help in general. Walk as much as possible every day and drink as much water as possible. Strangely, lack of fluid can make the swelling worse. Cut down on her salt intake

How old is your Mum? Does she suffer from other conditions or is on other medication?

Have a look for pictures of Golfers Vasculitis on the internet.

If you can take photos of the swelling and rash to show the doctor when she gets to see him thats helpful. Probably not urgent unless she has other symptoms like severe pain in her calf.
