Hi, i have been having red eye for both eyes for two weeks. Now on steroid for two days, but don't seem to do away. I'm quite worried. Anybody experiences these before?
Yes, I had dry eye after shingle 4 months ago and a while ago my right eye was red for around 2 weeks but it did clear eventually. The worst thing is the constant itching!
Steroid drops? What was the diagnosis for the red eye?
Hi
Were you examined by an eye specialist using a slit lamp or was it by your GP?
What reason/diagnosis were you given to account for the prescribing of the steroid eye drops?
Did the itching imporve or worsen folowing instilling the eye drops?
Did the dr you saw do any antibody tests or order any ultra sound scans of your eyes to rule out auto immune diseases of the eye(s)?
I would advise stopping the eye drops , contacting the dr to let him know that the eye drops do not appear to be helping.
I would look up the ingredients/constituents of the steroid eye drops to double check for any allergens . What brand of steroid eye drops are you prescribed? Even anti allergrenic preparations can cause a hyersenstitive reaction.
You say that your eye is red. Please can you describe in more detail, there are photos on the net if any resemble tour eye it would be useful if u could post it on here.
1. DSO tell your dr that your eye is not improving.
2. I would personally not put any more drops in until future instructions from your dr that it is safe to do so in case there is an allergic reacrion going on.
3. I would place tissues soaked in warm but not hot water , wring them out and palace over closed eye ids for a few minutes to get some form of comfort.
4 Avoid any eye drops, sprays, etc near your eyes. Avoid shampoos, hair conditioners, sprays, aerosols, smoke smokey atmosphere.
Another point is have u noticed if your eyes sting more in dry atmospheres?
Have u bought any new products including furniture, mattresses, carpets,?
Have you been in contact with any chemicals especially paint, solvents, ammonia, bleach or any cleaning or polishing products?
Hi I have sent a link from NHS Choices on the reasons for red, itchy eyes. however u really do ned to get back to the dr and tell him or her that the steroid eye drops are not effecticve. You may have dry eyes which is a serious and painful condition rquiring monitoring by an eye specialist. You are entitled to a second opinion. xx
Hi jane, my eyes is not itchy. Its painful and sensitive to light. Anyway glad to hear your eye heals.
Hi Margaret,
The steroid eye drop is Pred Forte and nevanac.. I just met for second appointment with my eye specialist today and was given oral medication Indomethacin. Just had my blood taken and chest x ray done. But waiting for result till next appointment. Overheard the diagnose is scleritis.
Hi delirious,
Really appreciate great deal to your reply!
I was examined by eye specialist using slit lamp
Eye drop given 3 days ago was 'Pred Forte' and 'nevanac'. After the steroid drop, my eyes is not painful and not sensitive to light.but the redness on the white part of both my eyes still exist .( ferrari red)
I met for second appointment with my eye specialist today and was given oral medication 'Indomethacin' and was told to continue on the eye drop with addition to oral medication indomethacin.
And had my blood taken and chest x ray done. But waiting for result till next appointment.
Overheard the diagnose is 'scleritis'.
But my eye specialist said my cornea is not affected.
I'm working in chemical environment. I would deal with few chemical that can causes eye irritant. Been working for few years in this industry. Could it be chemical irritant to the eye.?
But my eye specialist rule out possibilities of chemical irritant.
My eyes doesn't sting anymore after eye drop of pred forte and nevanac but red eye still persist with slight improvement after eye drop and redness will persist again after that..
I hope with addition of oral medication it will get better in these few days.
Thanks delirious,
Greatly appreciate your concern.
It does sound like they are taking good care of you. I would not advise stopping steroid eye drops without speaking to a doctor they normally have to be tapered gradually. Scleritis is serious and it seems like appropriate treatment.
I would want to know what underlying condition caused this problem with your eyes. This is often a symptom of some kind of systemic disease. I have an auto immune disorder which can lead to this condition or uveitis. I have had one episode of uveitis almost 10 years ago and it has never returned but my disease is well controlled.
Did they explain why they were doing a chest x ray? I have a theory about that but don't want to pre empt anything your doc is doing. Sounds like it is all under control.
Do you have other health issues currently? Tiredness joint pain?
Hi
No problem.
What chemicals do you come into contact with? any can irritate yur eyes.
Hi Regarding chemical irritant. Yes I was an Occupational Health Practitioner in a university where they had labs. research fellows would carry ou experiments using chemicals but had to have a confined area with ventilation in the lab to avoid inhaling/exposure to the chemicals and the fumes. This was referred to as a fume cupboard. An enclosed process.
However in a factory , manufacturing environment there is no such thing usually . so instead workers wear eye protection and protective clothing with open ventilation .
I bought a new mattress but had to send it back due to the fumes . I also found that my eyes started stinging again. Anyway it went bac todday so now I can relax, hopefully.
The eye specialist can say that he does not think chemicals can affect your eyes and perhaps in your case he is right. However common sense dictates that he cannot say with 100% certainty that the chemicals do not play a part in exacerbating the existing scleritis.
I do not mean to undermine your dr either, with respect he sounds as though he is doing the right thing. However be aware that you still need to be careful when it comes to the possibility of irritating your eyes . Hope that is helpful and clear as feeling tired thanks to the fumes from that mattress. It was a pocket sprung made with globules of wool and very expensive. Sorry for lengthy posting.
Hi margaret,
So for no underlying sickness or joint pain.
How long do you have uveitis for?
So far no direct spill or contact to the eyes.maybe its long exposure of inhalation .
Hi. My uveitis was mild and treated quite quickly in the same way as your scleritis. Steroid drops and some other type of drops I fail to remember the name of. It cleared up within about a week. Is the scleritis clearing now??
