i had Toric lens put in 7 weeks ago using monovision lens. my distance is good however my reading vision is not clear, need glasses to read. the doctor wants to take out the lens and replace a new lens that he tells me will fix the problem. I am worried that my vision could get worse with a second procedure. also I read to wait 4 month before changing out the lens as my vision could get better. what is your experience with this problem?
I am not clear on what you are describing. A monofocal lens is a single focal lens that gives clear vision at a specified distance. Most choose a monofocal lens to give clear vision at distance and then use reading glasses for closer vision. Some may choose to have clear vision close up, but then they need prescription glasses for clear vision in the distance.
.
Monovision refers to the use of monofocal lenses in each eye, but one eye is set for distance and the other eye is set for closer up. If your lens is giving you clear vision at distance, and you need to do the second eye, I presume for cataracts, then you could choose to use a lens that under corrects your vision to leave you about -1.25 under corrected. That should give you reasonable reading vision. Monovision requires the brain to switch between eyes and use the one that gives the best vision at the distance you are using. Some people can adapt to that, and others cannot. If you can adapt then you are basically eyeglasses free.
.
The best way to prepare for monovision is to get a contact lens correction in the second eye that leaves you myopic to test whether it is for you or not. For example if your eyeglass correction for the second eye is -3.0 D, then you would get a -1.75 D contact. An optometrist should be able to help you select a contact lens that simulates monovision. Contacts are easy to do trial and error testing with. An IOL is kind of a one shot deal.
