Hi. I am 3 weeks post op and feeling pretty pleased with my progues up to now almost to the point of probably getting a bit cocky about my abilities. This morning however my next door neighbour who had THR 6 months ago dislocated her hip simply bending down to put her sock on which she's been doing for a while now. Watching her in pain and being whisked off to hospital has reminded me that we ALWAYS need to be extra vigilant even as we improve. Take care everybody and stay safe.
Morning Sandra! Wowzerz!! I've been scared of that ever since I dislocated my first hip replacement back in July 2016! I still don't know how and I was not in the level 10 pain they claim you will be in as I was still walking and exercising with like that for at least a week!! I began noticing my hip was higher than the other, my leg was shorter and my foot would just go off to the side when lying down. Wound up having a total hip revision 3 weeks 2 days later....I'm a year out now and still have issues. So yeah it's best to be careful even at 6 months!! I didn't realize that could still happen!! Best of luck to you for a speedy recovery and healing!! Hugs Linda.
Goodness! That is certainly a wake up call! Thanks for that. I went to my allotment this morning(9weeks since op) and did just push an empty barrow a few yards!!! Will be very careful !

I have been doing similar stuff 9 weeks THR. Although I have been told to take it easy, I just find myself doing things without thinking as the pain lessens!! We all need reminding sometimes

Dear Christine
I don't think you will risk dislocation by pushing a wheel barrow but be careful when bending down to pick up weeds or twisting around. The better you have built up your muscles the safer you should be.
Cheers Richard
hi sandra ...
that is nasty !!! putting on socks, something we did without giving it a 2nd though, is tricky -
bending over, or reaching over and pull the sock of your foot sometimes makes the leg twist in or out ...
so yeah, be careful out there ... I used that weird plasic thing for a long time ...
I hope she is doing okay and didn't need surgery ..
thanks for sharing, sandra
big warm hug

Hi, thats really good advice...I havent had the courage to try putting on my socks yet, lol. I had the anterior approach and supposedly I have no restrictions but still worried about dislocation. Should I be worried or am I being overyly cautious?
Morning Kelly! I had the anterior and I dislocated mine within 3 weeks....to this day I don't know how or when but wound up with total hip revision. So I guess anything is possible!! Best of luck to you ! Hugs 🤗Linda
I was told that the best prevention for dislocation is strengthening of the leg muscles. The stronger the muscles are, the more force will be needed to dislocate.
Wow, thanks! Good to know, I think I'll just keep using the sock donner for now
Sandra,
Definitely something to be careful of. I've virtually not worn socks since my stage 1 in march, fortunately it's summer, but my feet are further from my hands than most of yours. I think Graham is right that strengthening the muscles and letting the tendons and ligaments strengthen is the best policy.

Dear Linda
Cannot be too careful . A week post op all I did whilst sitting In my office swivel chair was to reach out in front of me, rotate in the chair turn to my left and put something down on the table directly in front of me.
I experienced a heavy clonk in my hip and the shock caused me to drop what I was moving. I felt quite a pain and ended up in A and E for half a day. The X rays showed the hip in the right position but the feeling of the doctors was that I had suffered a dislocation...not good and I think I was very lucky in the circumstances to get away with it!
Cheers Richard
Dear Graham
Makes sense. Let's hope we are both reasonably safe now!
Cheers Richard
Wow! Well for me I don't remember anything painful no pop nothing.....I did notice as time went on the pain to walk was starting to get worse. Hip was higher than the other and leg was shorter. Exercises were harder to do, but I kept going. I Have a very strong tolerant for pain. Being in pain for many years. Wished my home therapist would of noticed me more closely maybe the outcome would of been different. This was all new to me and I didn't know.....😞
