On 28 Febr, I underwent a surgical operation, the trimaleolar fracture with the dislocation being fixed with 7 screws plus a plate, and on the other side 2 wires, fixed with wire and screw. Today I removed the metal. I am 6 hours after the surgery .How long will it take to recover? Will it hurt me just like the first operation? Anyone else through this? I’m 57 years old.
Hello. I had the same surgery July 2017. The surgery was not as bad as the 1st surgery. But
I got a infection in the incisions
some how. It was not due to anything I did. I had to go back into the hospital for 21 days to get the infection clear. I was upset with my doctor. Because
I didn’t have any infection, before this surgery was done.

I had similar surgery on Feb 10/18…plate with 6 screws on fibula, 2 screws in tibia. I’m just wondering if it was your choice to have the metal removed…or the doctor’s…and why. My surgeon is not opposed to removing it, but he strongly recommends to leave it in. Thoughts, anyone?
HI, In my case the fractures were at the lateral malleol-fibula and on tibia-medial malleol. My doctor said the bone is well consolidated after almost 9 months and can lead weight without problems. He said it’s healthier without metal in the body. So I removed the metal.Probably your fracture are not the same.
I had a similar surgery, and got an infection a whole month afterwards! There is not much you can do, the infection danger is on the operating table..

I had mine taken out, because the screws were starting to come out and I had lots of pain
they hurt. I could not walk correctly with them in. Can you walk ok? And do
you hurt any? I never want to go through this again ever! I’ve been 4 years now healing.

I can walk OK. My limitations are in squatting and going up/down the stairs. My leg also gets quite stiff. I am still doing physiotherapy. Trimalleolar fracture happened Feb. 8/18.
I am trying to ‘study’ the anatomy of the foot/ankle…and I think my problem lies with the inferior extensor retinaculum. I’m wondering if the plate on my fibula is hindering the flexibility.
I totally agree with you in not wanting to go through this ever again! I’m curious as to why you had 2 surgeries.

tracy, have you seen your xrays? i actually have a screw right in the area that you circled. it seems to be the one that stays sore all the time. i had the same fracture and dislocation as you back in May. i have 8 screws, a plate, and 2 syndesmotic tightropes on just my fibula, 2 screws on the inside part of my tibia, and that 1 screw in the very front of my tibia.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I have seen my x-rays and there is no screw in the very front. I have a plate with 6 screws on my fibula…and 2 screws on the side (bottom?) of my tibia.
I’ve never heard of syndesmotic tightropes.
awe, well i hope you are able to figure out what is causing you such fits! this break is no fun at all!
i tore mt syndesmosis ligament which hold the fibula and tibia together when all of this happened(basically a high ankle sprain) so he put in 2 tightropes running from my fibula to my tibia to hold them together
