Result of appt re: fractured greater trochanter bone

Hi everyone,

I've mentioned before about being 4 weeks post op and my greater trochanter bone fracturing. Well that was 9 months ago and I'm still on crutches.

Had an appointment yesterday {Fri} with the consultant. He did and aspiration of the hip a few weeks back.........result....no infection

We then discussed the fracture which I had ben told by others would heal itself eventually but take a long time.....well 9 monts and still on crutches is a long time This one knows I like straight answers.

So here is the prognosis.........he showed me the X Ray......a bit of bone has seperated and is no where near the rest of the hip. His expression is "its as far away as the sun is from the moon" and for a fracture to heal the bones need to knit together....NO WAY he said.   The next thing is I will be on crutches the rest of my life or possibly one crutch or even one stick but thats it I will always have a dip in that side.

He also says........safety first and because I have osteoporosis he advices me to make sure I always used a crutch at least in case I fall and fracture something

So the next thing is to try and make it as pain free as possible.

I have lots of pain with OA, scoliosis, etc but if we could even make that{fracture pain} bearable it would be a big help.  I would cope with the crutches....even though they are a nuisance

He gave me a cortison injection yesterday at 11.30am The pain went completely. He said it would be back in about four hours or so when the anaesthetic wore off but over time it  SHOULD get easier. If it does he will see me in 6 weeks and do another injection.

I could never sleep on the left side. The pelvic bone was agony and kept waking me up and when I eventually did get up in the morning it was really bad., He said test it and lie on that side.

I did last night.    Had to get up twice to go to the loo. Both times I got up......there wasnt even a slight pain which was unusual. When I got out of bed at 7.30am this morning it was sore but not very sore so we'll see what the rest of the day brings

Hi Eileen, I sympathise wth you over the crutches but surely it is better to use them than to fall again and maybe have more broken bones?

I am 16 months post THR and still have to use 2 crutches,, it's the only way I can keep my balance due to the leg lenght.

I'm so glad to hear you have no pain today and hope that I will soon be the same.

Take care, Jay x

Really hope the pain keeps away Eileen. Good luck with it.

Hi Jayive

Yes of course its more sensible to use crutches......I wouldnt dare go out without them.

You must agree what a nuisance the arecheesygrin when shopping etc  LOL

Thanks Whalie

Its now 3.15pm and not to bad at all.....I dont expect to be pain free but a lot less pain than I had would be nice wink

Sure hope this continues to give you relief. Even one day with that pain relieved.God bless you. I really look up to you.your a true trooper.smile

Hi Ginger

Dont you believe it  LOL  I try and I know if you have arthritis or whatever you have 2 choices.....Ohhhh I've got arthritis ...poor me and thats it or go out and grab the world by the scruff of the neck and get on with life...which is what I try to do.biggrin

Up until now I've been told it will heal and have been very frustrated when there hasnt been much difference. Now I know where I stand.....not going to heal.....I'll cope with it...but no doubt I'll have my down days......I might be on having a moan LOL

You take care

You are strong.like you say move on.

I've had to do the same thing too. I have arthritis all over to. But for me anything is possible with God.I look to him for strength when I'm weak.Philippians,,4:13  Is what keeps me moving.

BE well take care.

I dunno, I dunno, but I do not think I would accept a diagnosis & treatment plan of you bone is broke and we are simply going to leave it broke, now you get along in life.

I don't think I would accept that. I would be seeing second and third opinions before I acceopted for the rest of my life that I simply live with a non healed broken bone. Surley there can be some kind of filleer they put in or something. Traction to force the bones together so that they will knot and heal. It is not a diagnosis and treatment plan I would accept unless a few doctors told me the same thing. Best of luck to you dear.

Hi Ginger

I cant remember {back to the beginning} was it a tHR that went wrong with you?

Me I've got OA in hips, spine, ankle andneck.....kyphoscoliosis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis and now this fratured boneeek

How do you cope with the crutches when you try to do housework/cooking etc.

Yes Eileen it started with anterior THR. My adventure is a lot better than the ones I read here with the surgery.

I also have MS.which had been triggured back b/c of the pain and stress of surgery.smile

Hi

If you could see the X Ray and see how far apart the bit of bone that  came off is from the femur you would see that there is no way it will ever go into place again...or even near enough the bone that anything can be done about it.

It would take so long {if it was possible} to get another 2 or three orthopaedic surgeons to see me. The NHS would take for everconfused

Your right. The bone has to touch the fracture to chill in the bone. So sorry to hear this Eileen. sad

Hi Ginger

Thanks.....sorry I couldnt remember ......I should have...have a memory like a goldfishbiggrin

Hi again

I'm glad you understand......there is no chance of it healing so just accept it and learn to live with it. Which will be easier now that I know rather than being told it will heal but will take a long time.....is it any wonder I was frustrated when it didnt heal. I'm more at peace with this

Unfortunately I'm sick hotel by my self. The bus tour had its waking outside in the rain  thensay on the bus with wet socks and shoes.this happened two days in a row. The hotel took mgr to a pharmacy to get over the counter meds. I have s fever and stuffed head. One time I'm hot next I'm cold.

Missed the bus to go to new York city

I hope I can go to the statute of liberty tomorrow sad

I'm not understanding the injury. Can you try describing it again? You know you can add pictures to comments, in the box we comment on look at the top, over by the right. Just an idea about a picture.

Jodi theplace she it's talking about ids the large part of the femur side where the surgery hammers the new hip in. Part of this bone broke off from the bone.unless the fracture touched the bone it cannot heal.sad hope this helps.

Here is a picture. You can add pictures to comments, In the box we comment in, look at the top on the upper right. There is an icon there that let's you add a pic. Now looking at this pic, whereis your Trochanter broken? And how did it happen?
