Retaining Nutrition after vomiting

Hi, If I throw up 4 hours after I eat a meal, do I lose most of the nutrition and calories I consumed? I have severe vomiting during my pregnancy and I often throw up the entire meal several hours afterwards and I am worried my baby is not receiving the proper nutrition. For example I had plain rice around 7:30pm tonight and I threw up the undigested rice around 1am. Thanks in advance.

Hi sam519

If you are not retaining your food and not digesting it then you wont be getting any nutrition. If it is the early stages of pregnancy then it’s not unusual. You should try and eat earlier than 7:30pm in the evening and eat little amounts through the day. You could perhaps juice veggies and fruit and drink it slowly. Eat foods that are not heavy on your stomach such as rice especially at night. If the vomiting continues tell your doctor or midwife as perhaps your baby may not be getting the nutrition he/she needs…

I agree with Mary to try juicing to make sure your baby still got the nutrition. If you try juicing, it will not undergo digestion and will be be absorb to your blood directly. Remember that juicing is different from blending. You will get 90% of nutrition from fruit IF they are RAW. Try combination of green leafy then fruit. Green leafy is neutral. Try to drink your juice or water in between meals (2 hours after meal) NOT within meals because it slows down digestion, it dilutes hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Please don’t eat rice or take heavy meals at night. It takes 4-5 hours to digest your food. Try to eat more uncooked or RAW fruits and vegetables. Don’t eat fruits and vegetables in one meal because sugar in fruits ferment. Try fruits in breakfast, then vegetables lunch.

Ask your doctor for an anti emetic.
