Return to physio

Thought I was doing well, (9 wks p.o. )trying to get about outside without my crutch, not taken any painkillers this wk doing my exercises physio gave me.

Return to physio yesterday, then realise how much more work needs doing to strengthen the muscles. Got another set of exercises to do as well as sets from two wks ago. Must say I can tell the difference from doing first set, so I am most definitely going to carry on with new ones.

Onwards and upwards.

Oh, also been doing my stairs, a foot on each stair this wk.

It's the little thing's. Have a good wk end everyone

Well done Brenda !!!!  seems a major victory to me ...

Big warm hug

Well done Brenda, you're right, it is the little things that matter. I had my 1st Physio session on Weds (3 weeks post-op) & I didn't have any new exercises other than trying to do the stairs properly (I can do up, down, up, down on the bottom step). The only problem I have is my knee is still swollen so I can't bend it to get it on the step! I'm elevating & icing but it's a slow process! Good luck with your exercises x

Thanks Renee, I'm getting there. I don't know how people go back to work after 6 wks. I'm still needing my cat nap/rest, mid afternoon... And I'm enjoying it haha.

Love Brenda xx

We've got to keep up with them. Just done mine for today. She asked me to do them once a day. If I feel energetic later I may do a few more. It can only help. I feel like I need to rest it now though 😂😂😂

Great job keep it up !!!

Hi Brenda, would love to know what new exercises your Physio has given you.

I don't get to see a Physio - instead I have a booklet with exercises clearly demonstrated for each stage. It is really good, but nothing like going through with a Physio who can tell if you are doing them correctly or not!

totally agree with you, following the exercises makes the difference between a good recovery or not.

Our Surgeon has done his bit, we need to do our bit.

I know someone who had THR 3 months ago- doing amazingly well, she knows someone who is the same age as her and had the same procedure but walking with a limp and a stick. She asked him if he did the exercises and he said he "didn't have time".

That is my motivation!

you sound like to have the right positive attitude. Wow. Looking forward to going up and down stairs "properly!"

keep going and have a lovely weekend.

Hi Brenda! Did you have a posterior approach? I am also at 9 weeks and find walking difficult! I am not allowed to go to physio yet as I sustained a fracture during surgery. Wondering what I might be able to do at home to get the process started! Blessings Cindy

😆 Don't enjoy the 'two-step'?! Going up is fine, but when tired going down I seem to always revert to a two-step process...

Exercise makes all the difference for me .. if I miss a set, I know it the next day (pain, stiffness and additional swelling) and I am 19 weeks post. However, the same is true for injuries to my arm and hand after a fall 5+ years ago ... I need to do regular stretches to avoid stiffness and swelling and to maintain mobility.

So no surprise.

Hi Cindy.

Yes I had posterior op. I'm sure you will get your exercises once your fracture has healed. I'm starting to walk without a crutch but still a bit wobbly, the more I do it the quicker I will start to walk straight.

Hi Kris.

Why didn't you get appointment with a physio? I thought everyone had one, It was more lying on bed raising my bad leg in different ways, the new ones she's given me. its so much quicker doing stairs one foot one stair at a time. Still have to do do two feet one stair by nt time when im tired and aching though. I'll keep working on it.

Hi Brenda, no Physio here although v reputable Surgeon here in Bath.

Different areas have very different ways of doing things. From TED stockings to medication and post exercise.

I will follow my little book faithfully, in fact the next stage seems to include the exercises you talk about.

My Surgeon definitely warned me against doing too much, just walking and the specified exercises for 6 weeks. I think he has had experience of younger Hippies trashing their new hips in the early stages or loosening them, if not cemented.

But no Physio!  If I want to see one I will have to pay for it. I might do that after the 6 weeks as I am hopefull about Skiing again and will definitely need specific exercises for that. However will speak to him before I do!

Realy want this new hip to last!

well done on the stairs. Looking forward to doing that. X

I also have no physio. Nothing has been offered at all except for s booklet. I am just using my common sense. Yes, and I also want to ski again!

So glad to hear that. Thought I was the only mad one!  I have changed my picture to reflect my ambitions!  This was my 50th Birthday in Tignes only 18 months ago!  Think Avoriaz might be a good option as it is easy ski in ski out.

might have to pay for some specialist sports Physio after 6 weeks.

What are your thoughts?

T those who have access and the funds - hydrotherapy once your surgeon permits, is a great approach. Most places offering it have PTS as well and they are seeing a growing number of hip patients (at least here in Ottawa) and regularly conferring with surgeon's doing joint replacements so they seem to really understand restrictions and pacing.

Good luck.

That is a really good idea Linda,

I will have a look and see what is available locally.

Morning Brenda,

It sounds like you are doing very well.  And you're being diligent about the exercises.  Excellent.  I bet you'll notice progress every week.

I still haven't done any stairs except for the ones they taught me at the hospital.  I'm lucky to live in a condo with absolutely no stairs!  But I'll have to start practicing them sometime.......

Hugs,

Leslie

I have heard so many hipsters telling me to do everything the surgeon and Physio says and I'll be fine.  I think that is so true of those exercises.  Good reminder, Kris!

Hi Leslie,

I was only saying to myself the other day I'm glad I've got stairs, as I think it will help me with exercises. Don't know if it will help but, it can't be bad surely?

Brenda xx

I'm sure you're right that having stairs does help, Brenda.  I'll have to start doing them sometime as I start getting out into the world more.  You'll have a head start for sure!  The most painful exercise I do is tht marching in place.  It's not really painful but it feels very stiff.  Definitely used in climbing stairs.
