Revised Total Hip Replacement

Hello lovely people....

It's been a litttle while since I have posted but I have kept reading...

It's now been 4 months since my operation. All checks have been satisfactory but I am feeling so down. I have started physio and go off to the pool and do my exercises. I went back to work part-time 6 weeks ago with the help of a crutch a heat pad on my back and occasionally a knee support. I continue to walk with a limp and hate it. i seem to want to be better but I am down about the sheer time it is taking. I still need occasional help with socks or tights and my back aches more than my operated hip. My other hip needs an op but how I feel at the moment I am loathe to even consider it. I read some of the posts on this forum and it has kept me sane and grateful at times. When I had my first THR'S 14 years ago it was so much easier. I am 67 years old and like to be active.

Just keeping going is wearing me out. Can anyone help??

I had my first op 15 years ago and it went really well healed quickly and i had a new lease of life. I'm just 5 weeks after having the other hip done and it is taking longer to recover (I'm 62) there's more bruising, more aching, tenderness etc and it is taking longer to walk. There are muscular problems this time though and I hope after my surgeon meet I will be able to get physio.  I was a bit down but am now perking up as I can see improvement. I think being older it takes more time and it is too easy to compare to the first time. Each hip is different so the recovery will be different. It is taking you a long time but you have to think what it was like before the op. I am sure you will improve even if it is slower than expected. the difficult thing is that if you wait longer for the next one you need it may take longer to recover.

I am glad I had my second one done. You have to think about your own circumstances though and what is best for you and hopefully your surgeon can give you advice. Good luck with your recovery and your decision making.

Hi Chris,

Good to get your progress report.

I'm 3.5 months post op so useful....

all I can say is i've been regularly told i no longer limp. GREAT!

I think this is partly due to regular Tai chi and also some alexandra Technique lessons, both I recommend

Cheers

Mic

Hi Chris

I had my first hip op only 7 weeks ago. But I know exactly how you feel with the " Down " feeling. I have to have my other hip done in about 12 weeks and I am not looking forward to it either.  I really wish there was a better less intrusive way to cure the problem. I used to be a very active person and it is doing my head in sitting in these 4 walls not being able to go out much. A trip to the hospital in an abulance is a day out for me. I hope you feel better and have a better day soon.

Hi Annedi

Thank you for responding. You are right. I need a sense of perspective.

The last couple of days I have felt down and have forgotten about all the pain and how long it seemed to actually get my hip revision. The consultant tried to tell me that a revision is very different to a THR

but I felt sure I would recover like I did the first time around. I wish you a healthy but speedy recovery and thank you once more for instilling a sense of perspective.

All the best

Chris

Hi mic

Many thanks for your suggestions and I am pleased for you that you no longer limp and also a little jealous. I do put the work in in exercise and swimming and mostly I am not so down, but I am so impatient.

I wish you well and keep the good work up.

All the best

Chris

Hi Hailea !!

Thank you for responding and sympathising re this down period.

Having your hips done so close timewise  is very brave. I wish you well in your recovery and please keep posting re your progress.

I wish you well. I find not being able to do what I used to do very frustrating. My op has gone well. I get out mostly when I want to but I demand too much of myself. Take care and I will think of you.

All the best...

Chris

Good morning chris ... how are you this morning?  this is a roller coaster ride isn't it?  I am 11 weeks post op from R THR  and was told at my follow up visit on May 13, 2015 that my left hip's cartilage has deteriorated so fast within 6 months that a need surgery there too - reading posts from fellow hippies on this wonderful forum made me feel a bit better and less fearful to have that one done ... some of them can't wait !!!!  this doesn;t make recovery go faster now that the unoperated leg is hurting so much, does it .... taking deep breaths, accepting what is as much as possible brings peace - it needs practice and if not, than I just accept that I feel miserable and have pity party all by myself .... these, by the way, are getting shorter, thanks to you all here ... to realize that I am not alone on this journey is priceless .... take care and be gentle with yourself today .... big hug ===

Hi chris04362,

I had hip replacement 14 weeks ago, and i still limp a little now. But a week ago I went back to work on my job. Im a law enforcement officer and I wear a police duty belt that weighs about 20 lbs. Wore that duty belt each day for three days 8 hours. My limp was worse. Almost needed a cane. Had to go back to my doctor he put me out for 6 more weeks.

I have returned back to the physical therapy and doing therapy to strengthen my hip so when I return back to work I shoud be able to wear that duty belt.
