Revision THR 3 months ago

Hello lovely people...

I hope you can help me. I had a revision THR 3 months ago and now  walk with one crutch and limp a bit towards the right especially when I am tired. I try to keep active and  do water exercises and am due to start physio in a week's time. My left leg at the top is still painful where the revised new ball and stem were replaced

If anyone has had a revision can they let me know if what I am experiencing is normal for this sort of op?? How long is recovery for a revision?

Hi. I had lhip total hip replacement 27th April 2013. Today first say I went out for little walk with my boy friend as support. I took 2 crutches. It felt weird. Coz was feeling pain whilst walking. The pain was where the new hip is placed. I'm guessing I've still got a long way for recovery. But I did enjoy the walk with my boy friend.

Keep up with the physio. My physio he coming in the morning. Keep in touch.

Gillian.

Good morning Chris,  How are you this morning?   I understand that revision THR surgery is different from just THR one - my friend's mother had one the same time I had my THR, 8 weeks ago . while I was 100% weight bearing right away, she still is 75% .... I can only tell you that I am still limping and feeling the protheses more now than a couple of weeks ago ... Have you had your follow up visit yet? Mine is May 13 ... I had physical therapy in the hospital and a couple while at home ... f rom other posts I have read here on this wonderful forum, it seems that limping might be an issue while still  recovering ...

Hi Chris,

I had a revision done on 30th jan,I have the same problems as you ( it could be me you are talking about) I was told by my physio that the core muscles was weak and to build them up by exercises Pilates are good for it and also when doing exercises to hold in stomach and tighten butt cheeks, try doing it whilst stood on operated leg I found that one the hardest but the best, I have had added problems in that whilst doing the op my leg fractured so non weight bearing for 6 weeks. And when I was allowed to stand on my leg  it just collapsed so I am pleased to be where I am. I have notice that with the exercises it is getting better. Wishing you all the best

Hi Renee

Many thanks for your response. I am now total weight bearing but being very careful. I had my first replacement 15 years ago and it was very successful. The only problem is my memory may be too rosy about my recovery and I was anticipating similar this time even though my consultant assured me recovery would be slow and very different.

I remember following what was suggested and did a lot of mobility and water exercise.

I had my follow up two weeks ago and all is 'x-ray' well and there were no complications for which I am grateful. Being able to weight bear so soon after a THR is unbelievable and to be relatively painfree was I remember wonderful, but that is very different to now. But I am grateful now for it could have been worse and I am determined to try to stay positive and patient re recovery. Please keep me posted of your progress and every best wish for your friend's mother.

Chris

Hi Lorraine,

Many thanks. I too was told my muscles were weak, but because my first

THR had surgically affected them (different method used now apparently)

After the 1st THR I did a lot of exercise to build up muscle strength and overall results were very good. I was delighted with results and the awful pain was virtually removed. That was over 15years ago so I mustn't grumble. For almost14 -  15 years both my hips have been

virtually painfree and I realise how lucky I have been. I suspect I was expecting a similar result even though the operation is very different.

The left revision THR has been very different.

Thank you for suggesting Pilates - I will certainly talk to physio about the exercises. I find sustained weight/balance on my operated leg

difficult but I will persevere. I do believe that the right sustained exercise is the answer.

I am sorry to hear that during your op your leg fractured but you sound

very determined, positive and pragmatic. It is the only way to move forward day by day.

Please keep me posted of your continuing progress.

Wishing you all the best.

Chris
