Hi, I had a THR14 months ago and since then have been experiencing groin and inner thigh pain. I have had ultrasound cortisone injections, physio and very recently a hip aspiration which indicated no infection thankfully, Latest x-ray s indicate loosening so a revision has been advised. I’m very disappointed as I lead quite an active life. Your thoughts and experiences appreciated.
Sorry you are going through this.
I also had a similar case and needed to have the initial hip replacement redone.
It cost me much time and money plus I was also a very active person.
In my case, the initial doctor had put in the wrong size parts and by the time I figured out what was going on, it was too late to sue him, which truly should have been done.
I’d say there aren’t many options other than having the hip redone. Get a good surgeon.
Good luck.
If you need it - then you need to go through it. Recovery is exactly the same as before (I have had 2 revisions now), but easier since you know what to expect and how to cope.
DearMary how very disappointing for you. have you any idea what could have caused the stem to loosen? Anything like running perhaps? Best of luck. Richard
Revision is difficult. Mine has left me with knee and back pain and the inability to walk without a cane. Your prosthesis can be cemented in rather than replaced.
Groin and inner thigh pain would suggest that your acetabulum is loose. This happened to me and i had a new socket. i recovered well, did have to keep to partial weightbearing for a few weeks but once i came off crutches i very quickly progressed and in fact fir me i felt the whole thing was easier than primary surgery. You often read that revisions are never as good as first time hips but i would say I was better and had more range of movement after the revision. The hardest bit is waiting to have the surgery done , once its all over you will feel a great relief.

hi there i often read these posts and discussion board but rarely respond but your post fit right into my experience so i wanted to give you my thoughts
i am now 52 yrs and used to exercise like a fene- doing high performance(/ criss fit routines like PX90 and insanity videosi started having issues with my groin two years ago- dec2016 and havent been able to work out for at least two years like I once had.i finally went to an orthopedist in feb 2017 as the pain got too much After two MRIs, hydrocodisone shot, affixation of two vials of liquid, and seeing three orthopedists in that practice, their conclusion was that nothing was wrong and that i need physical therapy however after 7 months of Pt, nothing got better i was still in pain and it continued to get worse my therapist recommended that I go to another practice for an opinion. the new orthopedist ( from new practice) took one look at my hip and said i needed a replacement. i had that done in july 2018. but i continued to have groin issues. and while i love my surgeon, he too was confused as to why i would still have issues he sent me to a number of other soecialists ( sports medicine, and renowned radionlogists who speciality is diagnostic together everyone concluded that my hip flexor was rubbing up against my new hip and creating all the pain. i just came home yesterday from additional surgery on the right hip flexor where they lengthened the tendon and took all the inflammation out. while it is too soon to tell- the hope is that this will alleviate the groin pain that extends down to the knee and finally get me back to recovery. i am hoping to get back to my exercise routine in a few months
hope my experience helps you good luck
Wow - what an ordeal. I had been very active prior to the hip deterioration and AVN. I’ll take it a day at a time and not project, but having both knees replaced on 9/2/11 was a breeze compared to this. I hit a brick wall, woke from surgery in agonizing pain, had a melt down and panic attack - all within 24 hrs. Went to Kessler, an in-patient rehab, for 1 week and am now happily home with 1 of my 2 dogs. Even though I had the groin pain, I am still a work in progress!

Hi Audrey, what a dreadful time you’ve had. You certainly seem to have seen a wide range of health professionals . I hope this latest surgery proves to be successful and you get back to full fitness. I am hoping to be back cycling asap. Take care.
Hi Jane, very interesting to read your experiences with the dreaded groin pain. As you suggest, I think you are probably correct and the acetabulum is loose. I am going to an Orthopaedic hospital which is a centre of excellence for hip surgery so feel confident it will be resolved asap.
