I'm interested in talking to anyone who had an "Exactech" metal on metal replacement that had to have a revisit. What were your symptoms regarding the failure?
Hi I've had the plastic hip replacement on both with no problems however my father has had metal to metal again he's had no problems but he has to go back every two yrs to be checked to make sure no fillings are getting into his blood stream I've got a friend near me under the same instructions
The reason I ask is that my wife had the Exactech metal on metal 7 years ago and just had a revisit done because the cup liner was lose and the stem was also lose with a lot of femur bone eroded around the top 2/3 of the stem. Fortunately no metal found in the blood but she had complained right from the start that it seemed lose. Doctor took x-rays back then and blew it off her concerns. Not knowing what was normal and what it was supposed to feel like, she just continued to live with it until the pain sent her to see a new doctor. The other problem was that after the first surgery, that leg is 1/2 inch longer.
Ref to leg being longer or shorter is Always a concern however I do believe the surgeon do his best to keep the legs at same length but not always possible due to sometimes how the cup lays in the pelvis As for the stem feeling loose after the op your wife should have gone back and expressed her concerns with her surgeon if he said it was okay asked for a second appinian I hope your wife soon get things sorted all the best
Thanks Ross. The new hip has a stem twice as long as the first one with a ceramic ball and plastic cup liner. Fortunately, before the revisit surgery, she did not suffer a fracture, but with the lose of so much bone, the longer stem was needed for stability. 6 weeks in and so far so good.
Good pleased to hear your wife got sorted may I wish her a speedy recovery and happy new year to the both of you
