Right ear issue/vertigo/labyrinthitis

Hello All

after of week of constant dizzyness I went to the hospital the doctor there did some test to evaluate my condition (standing, sitting, eye moement etc) did not look at my ear at all but said I have labyrinthitis which is why I am dizzy. My question is how long will this last? he said medication was not neccesary but I feel like my heart races when I stand up, I feel woozy and dizzy, off and on, I know part of it is anxiety but is this normal? anyones feedback would be appreciated. It's scary and I don't think the doctor particularily was helpful.

Hi Shane - sorry to hear you have joined our dizzy group - hopefully it wont be for long,  I am afraid to say the doctors just guess whats wrong and depending how long it goes on for, the diagnosis can change.  Its normal to feel anxious, dont worry, hopefully it will subside.  Im surprised he didnt give you anything for it.  Usually betahistine resolves it quite quickly but then I dont have labyrinthitis so just guessing.  Im sure you will feel better within a week or two.  If not get back on here and we will all see if we can help but Im sure its just a temporary thing.  It should go.  Dont worry and see how you go.

Hi Shane, Well the reason he wasn't helpful is because th doctors don't know,. I had this last year, now the constant dizziness and nausea has gone, but I am completely exhausted all the time. And all the specialist can say is yes, that's normal with this and it will resolving its on time!

!

good luck

Christine

The trouble, with them sayin g things like it will resolve in Time is useless  misleading.  I,ve had it for almost 5 years now and one Dr actually said to me "oh have you still got it it, it should, have worn off by now".  worn off!!??

Sorry couldn't,t finish as this webpage is playing up and won,t,let you type or correct after so many lines!  It is as if youmhve a bad cold or flu that they think it should "wear off"!! Incredible eh?  they are just showing their ignorance I,m afraid and after all these years I have no time for them, and go back to my GP and get re referred.  However having said that even when you go somewhere you think,is top notch doesn't,t always come up to the mark!  I thinkmitmismbeciming more prevalent now though as here in the UK at my hospital,I go to I found a leafleting the waiting room by something called "Embalance" and it is about trials that are being done in the EU who, have put 3.5 million Euros to this programme, so i think someone is realising something has to be done.  friend in America commented last week to me that it is becoming more common there and it seems that doctors Don,t know what to,do about it!

I totally gree with you, Gillian. I've said beforehand these forums that you really are totally on your own with this phenomen, whatever it is, my specialist here in Australia is supposedly the best there is, the guru o all things vestibular, but here I am still struggling to get my balance despite doing the vestibular physio exercises and exercising myself most days of the week. I have completely lost my fitness level and am exhausted all the time. I have periods where I become really depressed and anxious then get myself out of it for a few weeks before it all tumbles around me again,  an no one really understands what you're going through with it.

good luck Shane, hope it resolves for you quickly, christine

Thanks for your feedback guys, it's just scary (I've not encountered this sort of thing before) I hope it goes away sooner than later, Gillian I hope only the best for you and hopefully at some point something can be done for your condition. This bites the pickle.

Yes Christine I hear you on the exhaustion thing too!   I take all sorts of supplements to try and keep myself up there.  If you live in Aussie (I have family there and have lived and worked  there too), check, out Green Barley powder. I was introduced to,it by family a good few years ago.  I can,t afford the Aussie one die to shipping wtc and get it,on line from a company over here, but the one down under is excellent.  I take every day in juice as it tastes awful,in water, but unnoticeable,in Apple,or,orange juice. Great for immune system and all sorts. Have a Google on it.  I also take support sups for adrenals as this condition really stresses them Via our own stress of course) out and that is why  we get exhausted as our adrenaline. Runs, out faster  than normal, people.  You. Ight want to,do some research on that too.

Thanks Gillian, I do take all sorts but will explore that one you suggest. Christine

Easily solved problem with Prochlorperazine 5mg. All very well for your doctor

saying you don't need anything .The dizzies will disappear rapidly and ,with

very few doses, I always keep a few in hand ,because it will reappear, and if you

treat it ASAP  you won't have to suffer

Jacqueline

I was given that drug. Jacqueline in the first year I had this, it made it worse!!! I wouldn't,t touch it with a bargepole it doesn,t work for everyone.

Too true gillian ,too true . One man's meat is another man's poison

Hi Shane,I was diagnosed with uncompensated labythrinits I ve had it for 6 yrs.i take betahistine, they do help me a little.i m afraid a lot of the doctors jugs look at you like you ve got two heads, they just guess as to what is wrong.i was told to learn to live with it,since then I have not seen a doctor about it.i get a lot of anxiety with it because I don't feel confident going outside on my own.i hope yours is only temporary and it sorts it's self out soon take care

Hi Shane,, sometimes it helps if you can define your type of dizziness.

A Discussion on Dizziness and Balance Disorders

Dizziness is a general term for many different symptoms. While it generally means an abnormal

sensation of motion, it can also mean imbalance, lightheadedness, blacking out, taggering, disorientation, weakness, and other sensations. The symptoms can range from mild and brief tosevere spinning sensation accompanied by nausea, also known as vertigo.

For the purpose of clarity, the following definitions will be used:

Dizziness: General term for all abnormal symptoms of balance and stability.

Imbalance: Inability to maintain balance, especially when standing or walking.

Lightheadedness: The feeling of nearly passing out, similar to the feeling you might get if youhold your breath for a long time.

Vertigo: The illusion that you or your surroundings are moving. While this usually refers to a spinning or whirling sensation, it can also be a feeling of shifting, swaying, or walking.

Hi Shane again, I've had it for 3 years, I keep researching -

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ear-infections/basics/definition/con-20014260

Recently I bought a book - Mayo Clinic on Better Hearing and Balance, only about 30 pages were on balance. Online info searches were better.

Hi Christine, I agree with you again. I've had VN 3 yrs and was too concientious doing phys therapy got sciatica. My specialist is best in Florida USA! I have constant exhaustion and fatigue. nap a lot in pm. I don't get depressed, just get p*ssed off :-)

I gave Shane links, but i think Patient is blocking them, I didn't know no links.

Hi Shane,

If it continues you will need more info

Test info to complete a full evaluation. The tests necessary are determined at the time of examination and may include hearing and balance tests, x-rays, CTs or MRI scans, blood tests, and ultrasound tests. A general physical examination and neurological tests may also be needed. The most common test for dizziness is the VNG or video nystagmography. In this test, the strength of the inner ear is tested as well as the coordination of eye movement. It involves monitoring the eye movements with a video camera after placing warm or cool air into the ear canal. This usually causes a transient sensation of dizziness. Before the test, it is important not to take any medications that can affect the result such as Valium, Antivert, alcohol, and others.

Even ENTs can do VNGs

there can be a problem with "pigeon holing" however, when defining people's, symptoms arria as I have experienced only too well.  sometimes a lot,of us Actually experience all of  the above that  you mention,  at different times, according to where we are, ie inside or outside, on a moving vehicle, lying down, or standing up. then there are different times of day, whereby when more tired pr exhausted other symptoms can kick in like .air hunger, palpitations, nausea, etc., that may not actually be present when being tested.  I have had all those tests, some more than once, and although I,ve been told I have some kind of "chronic . disequiliberium" , the consultants , physios, etc etc still cannot define, nor diagnose the cause, nor specific treatment.  I agree that Shane definitely needs to have all of those tests if he hasn't, already, but  they are not necessarily a panacea for diagnosis as I have all,too sadly found out.

I will try to get through this week, and I do have anxiety issues which again I am sure is not helping this process. If after this week things are still not going well I will seek the attention of my family doctor. I have been getting the palpitations, nausea, dizzyness on and off, and I'm sure part of the greif is not being 100% certain what is happening (not that the doctors can be 100%) I am trying to keep positive though.

The palpitations are really worrying, but stress doesn't normally cause palpitations. If your Dr is not worried about that , change your Dr.

I would suggest you need a 24 hour ECG that will examine that.

As for the Vertigo, suggest to your Dr that Betahistine is a recognised drug for this condition.(16mg 3 times daily|) followed by I Cinnarizine at night.

These have really helped me. Fortunately my Dr diagnosed me immediately. It started with the bedroom spinning and inability to get out of bed in the morning.

Hope you find this helpful. Let us know what your Dr says.

Best wishes

Pauline.
