Root Canal - First Stage Filling

Hi, is it normal for the dentist not to fill my post root canal cavity after the pulp has been removed?

Instead I have been left with a hole, that is scheduled to be filled next week.

I thought perhaps a temporary filling would have been placed over the hole in between treatments.

I had a temporary filling that my dentist put in there until the crown was ready to be made. Yeah, I don't think that is good practice. 

I would go get a second opinion from a dentist though. I'm no expert.
