Same ache with THR 3 weeks after surgery

Hi everyone, I had my THR 3 weeks ago and I'm feeling a bit crap. The consultant and everyone I have spoken to that has had a THR said that their previous achy arthritis feeling practically disappeared and they just had to recover from the actual wound healing and muscles and stuff healing. But that it was a different type of pain than before they had the surgery. I can notice myself getting stronger each day and I can walk better each day and do my exercises better each day. But I still have this achy pain like I did before hand in where my hip would have been is this normal? Like is it just part of recovery? Thank you (I am 28 years old needing the surgery due to hip dysplasia as a child and having to reconstruct my socket, resulting in eventually it being bone on bone)

Same as me , hip dysplasia leading to OA . Age 35 . I'm 3 weeks post op . . I have a lot of groin pain at the moment. It's a long recovery X

Hi Shauna.

I was feeling the same as you. Prior to my op had horrible groin pain and like you told this would disappear immediately and was just healing pain. I will be 6 weeks post op next Friday. The last 3 days my groin pain has been really bad to the point I was thinking had I dislocated !

Last night this groin pain was a lot less and very much less today. I can walk with no supports now and even managed the stairs today normally. Easier going up than down but hey ho small victories.

Recovery has been a real roller coaster. At week 3 I was probably at my lowest. People have said recovery accelerates between week 6 and 8. I'm hoping that's my stint of severe groin pain is over.

Hang in there. I live in hope. Healing hugs. Xxx

I'm week 3 and at a really low point 😪. Painful to walk , progress seems so slow . Each op will be slightly different and I also had to have a lot of work to reshape my hip socket. I think that makes a big difference

I know the feeling so well Bobbie. Thought I would be back to work at 6 weeks no bother !

hi Bobbie. Know the feeling so well. As I say 3 weeks was my real low point. Thought I'd be back to work by 6 weeks. I'm nowhere near that point !

8 weeks before I can drive and 10 weeks before Doc will sign me off. It's a long hard slog that nobody tells you lol.

Just think I'm stiff as a poker every time I stand up but we will all be dancing by Xmas.

Chin up. Xxxx

Hiya bobbie thanks for the reply, I'm so sorry to hear ur also in pain. I new I would have a lot of pain to deal with but that same old dull ache and even worse ache wen I try to walk short distances are very much present. And it was that feeling I had (but more extreme because I did more aswel prior to THR) that lead on to me needing this surgery that I couldn't walk very far at all 😓 I'm really hoping this pain subsides and the surgery has been a succes.

Thank u for the reply Sandra and I'm sorry you've also been having a rough time of it. It's been getting me down because I didn't think I would have this same achy feeling as I did before. I knew I would have a lot of pain but I thought it would be different pain if u get me? I've been very emotional and crying a lot the past week it's been very hard as I have a 2 year old to run after (I've been getting a lot of support but I still need do bits, so it's quite hard) I really hope this surgery was a success and I can actually clean the house without crying like beforehand lol

I wish u a speedy recovery too love xx

My God Shauna. Recovery with a 2 year old. You deserve a medal girl. I'm sure the groin pain is all part of the healing process and with a little one you won't be getting as much rest as you need to.

What they do say is the more you do your physio exercises the quicker we heal. It's really hard work.

It seems that people who have had anterior approachvrecover so much quicker and without all the pain. I'm going to check this out with my surgeon when I see him.

Sending you healing thoughts. Xxxxx

That is indeed very true. I wanted anterior but my surgeon wouldn't do it . Recovery time is much less , Less risk of dislocation as well . I wanted it because I have 3 children, . The anterior approach is longer in theatre so there for a more expensive procedure . If you go private your more likely to get what you want. 😳

Hi Shauna.

Had my RTHR on 13th July my experience was 4-6 weeks of thigh pain in operated leg after surgery, however I found my recovery quickened over this period also, I guess it's just the healing process can't expect it to be pain free sadly. I am feeling 95% recovered now though no pain a little ache if I walk distance.

Good luck with your recovery.

Graham.

hi shauna,  warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum where we share our personal stories and experiences --- we come together in all stages and ages on this interesting road -So sorry to hear that you still are in pain and also happy that you feel that you get stronger every day and walking is getting better - I am one of them who said that the awful grinding, gnawing pain was gone ... and it was after 2 THR surgeries - of course everything else in my body started to hurt - 22 muscles were severed,my leg has been manipulated to forcefully get to my joint before it was removed ---hardware was hammered in after the cavities were skillfully prepared ... your socket had to be reconstructed, darling - bone and everything in our body is alive ... It is early in your recovery and it takes time to heal --- are you taking pain medication?  Please continue to take them as prescribed and be ahead of the pain ... be very gentle with your self ---- big warm hugrenee of course, when the pain gets worse , see your doctor asap

Loved that we will all be dancing by Christmas!  Come on, let's all try for a hippydedodah hippy shake Christmas morning, no matter how wobbly that may be!

I'm 3 weeks post-op today. I felt the very best the evening after surgery and the next day - I'm guessing because I still had some of the nerve block in my system. Thereafter is wasn't bad - I was walking really well and minimal pain. PT advised I was doing great. Then had a setback this past weekend, likely because I decided (wrongly)that I didn't need anti inflammatory meds. So back in and doing ok. First session with outpatient PT yesterday...today my leg hurts like pre-op. 😩😩. As many have said it's just going to be a long up and down healing process. Best to all!!
