Hi all. I had a polyethylene cup / titanium stem hip replacement 5 years ago at age 37. I now am having the same pain I did before the replacement: pain bringing bent knee to chest, walking up stairs, lifting leg into car.... anyone else with this problem?
I'm seeing surgeon in 3 weeks.
Thank you!
Hi
I had my right hip replacement at age 35 & got 6 years out of it. Yes the hip begin hurting after 6 years just like my previous pain. I had a revision in 1991 & that one lasted me 11 years. I'm now on my 3rd revision. I was quite active as a nurse & equestrian. To bad they don't come with life time warranties!

Nightmare Randi.....I know I went through total worsening hell for five years and its scarey...makes me turn inside and brings a tear to my eye...So sorry to read that ...
Just hope all goes well with your replacement, awful to have to go through it all again after hardly any time at all, but you have been there before, and have no choice but to go through it all again.
Keep us informed how it goes please.
Ian.
Hi Vickie-
Thank you for your response. I also am a nurse, and figure our active work with long shifts on our feet dont help the life-span of our implants.
I've been reading that my symptoms also match iliopsoas bursitis or the tendon catching on the cup portion of the implant. If I may ask, what was the nature of your implant failure? Did you have a loosening or break of the implant?
I understand if you do not wish to answer the question and respect your privacy.
I'm a bit frustrated at the thought of having to do this process over again and am hoping perhaps it's an easier fix than another revision.
Thank you again for your reply.
Best to you.
Hi Ian.
Thank you for your reply. I am quite frustrated with the thought of having to go through a revision after only five years, and I am hoping for an easier, or less complicated, diagnosis. You are correct, that being so young at my first revision, I knew I would be in for additional revisions, just didn't think this soon.
Will keep you posted.
Best to you.
Hi Randi,
Glad to hear that you have already made an appointment to see your surgeon. They'll take x-rays to see what's going on with the joint. If that comes back normal you'll probably have to do some physio. If that doesn't work, then an MRI. I know, because I've been through something similar. MRI is always the last resort because it's expensive.
Best of luck, and keep us posted!
Hi Randi
What happened my case was I had worn out the shell/liner after only 6 years. Being a nurse & loving horseback riding did help to put some miles on it for certain.
At that time only the shell was replaced. Did well until the pain returned after 10 years. My original sugeon xrayed it & couldn't figure out what was the cause of my pain. I sought a 2nd opinion at a world renowned teaching hospital with the professor of joint replacement. He said it was siatica. It would resolve. Come back in 6 months. I sought a 3rd opinion. This time the orthopedic surgeon said...Your pain is due to the bone cement in your femur holding the stem. It had deteriorated after 16 years. I've now used this surgeon for 16 years!
I would definitely seek more than 1 opinion. I'm in the USA. I'm not certain where you are.
Please feel free to send me a private msg if I can help you in any way.
Take careā”

Hi again-
Thank you for your info. I'm in Northwest, NJ.... close to NY. I went to The Hospital for Special Surgery before my first hip (the one bothering me now) and was advised it was a straight-up osteoarthritis hip replacement. That they could do it there... or recommend a surgeon closer to my home who trained at their hospital. I did that... and chose a surgeon they recommended who was the senior partner of a surgeon I work with. Surgery went perfect- but he retired last year. So I'm seeing the surgeon who did my second replacement. I feel awful that this surgeon is left trying to fix/figure out the problem of my first surgeon. SIGH.......
Im just so nervous of having to do this AGAIN so soon. My second hip was only 2 years ago....
So frustrating.
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm just frustrated with the idea of having to deal with this AGAIN so soon. Having both hip replacements go so well, I was so relieved to finally be 'done' with the misery and pain. Im exhausted with bring in pain... as I'm sure you can relate.
That's why I appreciate and like these groups... we can certainly relate and sympathize with one another.
Best to you!
