I have been a nervous wreck and stressed and anxious since I had a health scare in early January. My doctor did a CBC and my WBC came back slightly elevated. 12.4. I’m scared now I have leukemia. She didn’t mention doing anything special because of this. Should I be concerned? I don’t know what to do.
You do not need to worry, your white blood cell count only increases slightly. The malignant pathogens of the leucocytes will increase very high numbers from a few dozen to hundreds of G / l
A slightly elevated WBC would be far more indicative of an infection than cancer. If you’re not symptomatic for infection, I’d say you don’t even have to blink twice at that number. Don’t be afraid of an abnormal lab value unless your doctor expresses concern. Labs can vary in the same day. I literally had two tubes of the same type of blood work drawn in the same venipuncture and the results varied. So, no, you should not be concerned.
For the record, I’m a RN. ![]()
