Hi all
I've been the doctors today and he's put me on beta blockers which I am now scared to take 😑
Are they safe? Can they stop the heart? Can they damage the heart?
What will happen when I take them?
I have also had blood taken to test my magnesium.
Hi, Beta blockers like all drugs suit some people better than others. You don't mention what type but there should be a leaflet enclosed. What you have to remember is that any side effects mentioned aren't likely to affect everyone. Your doctor prescribed them on the basis of what symptoms you said you were suffering from and thought they were the best choice for you. Under the circumstances I would suggest you give them a try and see how you go for a period of say 3/4 weeks and if you aren't happy with any effects return to your GP.
I take propranolol. They can make you feel tired at first. Sometimes cold. Your heart won't stop. Mine slows down to about 60 which is fine. It still goes up over 80 sometimes. I take 80mg, I think the maximum does is 160 or 240mg.
Hi. I have been taking 40g propronolol odd days when needed for the last 2 months which has helped my anxiety but from tomorrow I am going to take one daily after talking to some people on the Propranolol group in here. Have not notice any side affects but was afraid it would reduce my activity but have been reasured this is not the case. Perhaps there is a particular beta blocker group for you in here depending on what ones you have been prescribed They would be able to help you with your concerns on there
I'm not going to tell you what you should or should not do bUT why did they prescribe you them? Honestly I wouldn't take them unless I had tried everything else and my symptoms were severe. Have you tried to see if food I tolerances are maybe causing your symptoms? I'm in the middle of finding out whether I have Celiac and when I eat anything that has gluten I get MAJOR ANXIETY AND my heart skips a beat or 2 a day. I now am doing a gluten challenge to then get tested. The point is that try to find a CAUSE for your heart racing...bc honestly you don't want to be on beta blockers they have side effects of their own. Hopefully you can find the cause of your symptoms. I do believe anxiety is a symptom and not anecessarily illness...many will disagree bUT I truly do believe that.
I've had sooooo many blood tests. I've been tested for celiac and it came back I don't have it, I have hashimito thyroiditis but my thyroid level are normal. Doctors are testing my magnesium also.
I don't have a lot of palps skipped beats compared t some but I am a huge worrier
How'd your anxiety start? Do you have digestive issues? I ask bc you could be gluten sensitive without having Celiac. Whether my test comes back negative or positive I'm eliminating gluten bc after eliminating it for a few days I felt better... that was only a few days. Try going gluten free for 1 month then see how you feel. The most common intolerances are to gluten, dairy, soy, and corn. And yes they do produce anxiety and so do night shade veggies. How old are you?
Ahh right I didn't know that mite try it. I'm a veggie so won't be so bad I don't think lol I'm 32. My anxiety got worse after I had my son 15 months ago, I also have anxiety about him :-(
Obviously that doesn't mean that's your problem but hey wouldn't hurt to try. My anxiety started out of the blue 4 months ago when I had never suffered from anxiety in my life. But hey we'll see. Are you taking anti anxiety meds or maybe trying anti depressants? Have you had your hormones checked? Or had your blood tested for diabetes? Or your vitamin D? Maybe just try a few tests at a time. ..if everything comes back normal then just try to keep busy and try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day...trust me it'll help. Even though your diet seems healthy try eating nuts or seeds...a variety of fruits and veggies... bc That's where you can get all your vitamins. Hope you feel better soon! Even exercise would be good for your heart!
All medications have the risk of side effects,if you don't want to accept the risk, then simply don't take them, the choice is always yours, noone can or should force you to take meds if you'd rather not
Hi, meljenk: My doctor put me on beta blockers, too, and they really help me. No, they won't stop your heart, sweetie....they will get your pulse back down to normal, making your anxiety vertually gone. It has helped me so much that i would recommend you follow your doctors orders and don't be afraid...they help!!
Not a fan of beta blockers myself. I was on them. A weak and for me it was horrible. It will depend on which receptirs it effects in your body. Worth a try and see how you feel. All medication have adverse effects, you need to see how it effects your body.
