Sciatica pain in knee and outside of leg

I am 16 weeks post THR and am having regular discomfort in the operated leg. I am having difficulty walking freely due to the discomfort. I also had a torn Gluteous Minimus tendon which was repaired. Yesterday I had a massage and she said this is normal in the healing process.

I went to my doctor and he is pleased with my progress. I want to start running my dogs in agility but he says no. I also am having problems doing stairs with my operated leg leading. Has anyone else had this happen and did it totally go away?

Wow at 16 weeks you are hoping to do agility with your dogs, I don't think so, you have just put a prosthesis in your hip socket, this is a pretty hefty piece of kit and your pelvic cup needs to get aquainted with it, exercise it by all means but the last thing you need to be doing is running your dogs, think about the sudden turns and bending to let them know how good they are. I know because I have done it with a good hip :-) concentrated on getting completely over this and then you want cause yourself an unwanted injury that could put you right back.

Other than wanting to run (literally) before you can walk how you doing

Sorry missed the other part of your question as so shocked by dog bit LOL yes your symptoms are perfectly normal, are you still taking some meds, resting, elevation, massage and icing still.

I am gathering your 100% weight bearing

Hi I am 100% weight bearing and no pain in hip or tendon area just the sciatica pain. I was bad and did a little running in my agility class and probably aggregated it. I was hoping to compete the end of December but no way now. I am used to being able to push through stuff but this is hard now for me to do. I do exercises 2 times a day as directed. I am just perplexed and disappointed that I am not further along.

I am training the dogs at class but sticking to walking. The hip and tendon seem fine just the nagging sciatica discomfort. I am finding out this is a longer recovery than I thought. I will have to learn patience. Also I had a posterior incision so that takes longer to heal also.

I am off all meds and have been since surgery. I do take ibuprofen as needed. I am not elevating because i was not advised to do that.

Hi you sound to me as though you are doing really well, its a slow process as you have discovered, but it want be long now, are you sure its sciatica because you will get pain in the buttock and down to knee when recuperating, do you get any swelling still

No swelling and no I am not positive it is sciatica but that is what I am thinking. It is a different kind of discomfort. I am told I am doing well and walking better than before my surgery. I competed until 2 days before my surgery.

I am grateful to have found this group.

Im sure someone else will be able to give you more advice but I'm glad you have found the site to, its amazing with a wealth of info and advice, 99.9% good LOL if you press into buttock at root of pain does it ease it, hard pressure can often ease it. Its like acupressure and helps break down the tight muscles

I had a Gluteus Medius tendon repair 5 weeks ago, so I'll be watching this thread! Where exactly is your pain, does it hurt all the time or only when using the muscles, and what kind of pain is it?

I really don't have pain in that area now. Originally I had pain in the back side of the Gluteous. Sometimes i got sharp pain but it all calmed down. I am weak going up stairs and when i first get up I am very unstable in my first steps. Now I think in the healing process my sciatica is kicking in.

I was told to go up with the good leg and down with the bad or op.leg.in regards to climbing stairs.

Oh I am fine doing that but I am trying to go back to alternating legs

Sciatica is horrible. I had it when I was pregnant. The pains started in my buttock and shot down the back of my leg. Could barely walk. Hope you get better soon!
