Seasonal affected order and summer affected disorder ?

Usually I suffer with S.A.D. in the latter winter months.  However since the sun has started to shine, I find I am still a bit depressed.

Being a senior citizen and on loads of medication, I am reluctant to get my G.P. to prescribe anti-depressants because I always end up in hospital with side effects.

My question is this - what are the best Vitamin supplements to take for low mood ?   I am already taking Vitamin B complex which is good for the nerves.

Also, what foods are good mood enhancers ?   I know bananas are one.  Any ideas welcome.  Thanks

Hi Angela, I know these supplements can be good for brain health and can help to boost mood: Ginko, Ginseng, Cod liver oil, Krill oil, Vitamin D, Omega 3 and Magnesium. Theres also Vitamin B but you're already taking that.

There may be others to that I'm not aware of. You could always see what info you can find on google. Also you can ask your GP and local pharmacist at your chemist for advise on natural remedies to.

Hi Angela

It could be worth taking a good quality magnesium supplement. There are several different types of magnesium with different benefits. Magnesium Aspartate isn't particularly easy to find in shops (they have it on Amazon) and has been shown useful in treating chronic fatigue as it helps lift mood and give energy.

Magnesium Malate is good for muscle and joint weakness and is useful for fibromyalgia patients.

Magnesium Taurate has a calming effect and is good for slowing the heart rate.

Magnesium-L-Threonate has been found to be good at improving memory and concentration.

Magnesium Citrate is the most common form and this is what is found in most general magnesium supplements. It is easily absorbed but can have a laxative effect. Whatever magnesium you take make sure it is chelated (not actually sure what that means but non chelated mag supplements are said to be almost pointless).

Another quick question...

Have you had your thyroid checked?

I had it tested about 2 months back and it was normal.  I must admit I do have the symptoms related to thyroid disorders.   Could ask for another blood test I suppose

Chances are they only tested your TSH which is the standard blood test for thyroid. You should ask them to test both your T4 and T3 as these give a much more accurate overview.
