Second thr

I am nearly 70 and fit. Just over one year ago I had a thr. All went smoothly. Usual things no sleep for six weeks, could not sleep on operated side for 4 months. I have a 11 mm leg length difference which I correct with a cork raise. Very pleased with new hip. I am seeing Surgeon next week about second hip and he might recommend a second thr. My question is does anyone have experience of Surgeon being able to match up second leg length accurately with first operated hip? For others out there I believe it can take one year to fully recover.

Hi Margaret

Yes I had a small leg length difference after my first LTHR. The PT did a measurement to confirm and I also corrected with a heel lift. I have now completed the second THR with the right being replaced 10/2 (the first one was done 11/10 16). So, in less than a year, I had both done.

When I scheduled the 2nd THR, the surgeon did a MRI to confirm the leg length difference. It was mm difference similar to yours. He said that he would take that into account with second replacement. But he also cautioned me that trying to get them exact length would probably not happen. In fact most people have leg length differences although very small.

So far since the second surgery, I have not used the heel lift correction. Everything seems to be fine and will confirm leg lengths when I start PT next week. I'll have the therapist do a measurement.

I had some back issues due to slight scoliosis that can be taken care of with yoga and stretching.

Hope this helps,

Hi Margaret. Just had my second THR. First one was a year ago. The difference in length with first one was hardly anything. Doc said with second HR it would get better.

Here I am 17 days post and this time it seems they are way off. Not as much now since the swelling has gone down but I do see the leg with the recent new hip a bit longer. Initially it was my other leg that was a tiny bit longer after that THR.

I’m praying I don’t need a lift. I work in an office and like to dress up. Bad enough I haven’t been able to wear heels in years.

Wishing you the best.

Hi Margaret:  I had thr on September 6 for what was originally diagnosed as "non-displaced fracture."  I had almost an inch short leg due to a fall in my backyard.  When I met with the P.A. the day prior to surgery, he assured me that leg length symmetry was definitely a part of the procedure.  In reading my operative report, they had difficulty in sorting my leg length vis-a-vis hip stability, but they performed a leg lengthening procedure on the short leg and I now walk without a limp.  I was very vocal with both the doctor and P.A.that this was a high priority for me, and fortunately they listened.  Wishing you all the best ~ Janet
