Sectioned, diagnosed and drugged (within 48 hrs) age 15, without parental consent!

Olanzapine gets dished out to children in the UK, has no FDA approval from what I can find, for use in this age group, approved for adolescents yes ... a very broad term. Oh and don't start a child on 2.5mg go straight in at 5mg and up the dose a week later, again without parental consent. Not happy, do not feel that services are following their guidelines.

Sadly, once a drug has FDA approval, doctors can prescribe it as needed. This is how we get heart medications for hair growth, acne medications as a wrinkle cream and others.

It is up to the doctor to make sure it’s safe for the patient. Unfortunately, docs generally don’t keep track of all the contraindications of meds. You have to check with a pharmacist for this.

This drug was prescribed to my mother in her 80s. When I read the side effects, it is. Clearly contraindicated and NOT recommended for elderly patients.

Yup- pretty messed up!

Olanzapone is the generic name. This drug was approved as Zyprexa in 2000.

The genetics are required to be within a certain percent efficacy of the name brand drug.  That said, FDA requires companies prove efficacy. During clinical testing, drug companies choose the parameters for their test patients. Drugs must have side effects that are minimal for the disease being treated, and studies must show that the drugs work. However, as a scientist, I would never ever design an experiment to prove something, only to test something. Herein is the major flaw of the system. Every experiment is biased before it starts because a certain outcome is required. This is not science.
